Steam shovels and bulldozers began on the first turf runway of Amarillo’s Tradewind Airport for private aircraft. The bluegrass field will be drained and irrigated and the port is to be completed by September 1, 1946.
A private field to serve exclusive aircraft use will adjoin Amarillo's southeast city edge, two and a half miles from downtown. The Tradewind Airport port, backed by a $200 000 corporation led by Shelby Kruser, aims to open by September 1 with a flying school and repair shops moved from English Field.
Peres Amarillo plans two turf runways and 621 acre Tradewind site to serve private aircraft with military and commercial traffic at English Field. Two 2800 by 300 foot runways will be bluegrass turf, irrigated and drained, with steel hangars and a large shop. Ground broken. Civil Aeronautics Authority approval pending. Bel and Braden handling apron work.
Clyde E. Westhoff, 45, of Sunray, is dead after a gas plant blast that also injures W. E. Lawley Oscar J. Watson and Robert A. Milton. The explosion along a 100 foot air line caused shock and bruises for the three men, with about 150 workers nearby. Westhoff had worked for the company since 1932 and is survived by his wife and child. Property damage about 30000 dollars. Time of blast 9 20 o clock.
Washington reports the Office of Price Administration cut butter margarine lard shortening and oils from 12 to eight points per pound for the Oct 28 to Dec 1 period. Meat points stay mostly the same with a four to three point cut on seven fatty pork cuts amid a pork supply rise. New 10 point stamps issued Nov 1 with four red stamps waning. stamps valid until Feb 28.
J L Gober and his father Fay found a raccoon by the Palo Duro Canyon road last July and named him Butch. The 12 year old boy plans to keep Butch with him as he travels from 1704 Hayden Street to Wolflin School. Butch follows everywhere and eats table leftovers washing his food beforehand.
A Dallas Defense Plant Corporation surplus list lists million-dollar war plants and 19 post holes. An accountant found the inventory. officials warn the government loss may grow as bidders are sought for the holes.
The region faced a brutal cold snap with frost reaching as far south as Waco. Dallas logged its coldest Oct 25 in 32 years at 36 degrees, while other cities reported 30s and 40s. Cooled yet, temperatures are rising to the low 70s today and tomorrow.
In Jersey City on October 25, four newly discharged overseas veterans organized a dinner for their draft board. They announced a special train departing Amarillo at 6:30 AM tomorrow, traveling to Fort Worth Dallas and Houston. The service is for members of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Lewis O. Doty, resident manager of the Stevens Hotel in Chicago, says a regular visitor, a panhandler, comes daily at 4:30 p.m. to exchange alms for folding money. He claims the man works an eight hour day never overtime after 4:30.
The 63rd annual session of the Grand Chapter of Texas Order of the Eastern Star closes tonight with installation of officers for 1945 46 at the Municipal Auditorium. Mrs Lollah Mae Vollus and Norman H Read to be installed as worthy grand matron and worth grand patron. Traffic court notes Amarillo 24 hour period shows eight moving violations with fines totaling 76 dollars and 23 overtime parking cases. list includes speeding no license and reckless driving among others.
Reval Company relations and loans toast the incoming grand matron and grand patron, with gifts to Mrs Wollus including an antique rose vase and a china service from District Four in Houston. Mr Read receives a Stetson hat from two local chapters as final committee reports close today.
United Press reports CIO United Auto Workers authorized a GM walkout as 70 to 90 percent of General Motors workers voted in favor. Officials said no strike would occur until remedies are exhausted. Chrysler employees voting similarly. Greyhound drivers east of the Rockies threaten Oct 31 walkout. American Airlines ground crew walkouts in sympathy. Pan American Airways transport workers ended a two day stoppage.
