New York Oct 24 A scientist jurist and aviator will receive the Roosevelt medal for distinguished service at a banquet October 27 in the old Roosevelt residence East 20th street The honorees are Charles Evans Hughes newly named to the world court Charles A Lindbergh aviation advisor and Frank M Chapman curator of ornithology at the American Museum of Natural History They are to be presented by James R Garfield president of the Roosevelt Memorial association The event marks the late president and his love of wildlife exploration and history
London reports Dr. Mansfield Robinson says a Martian message sent early today was not received, blaming the British Post Office facilities for the failure. He cites the wavelength of 18,700 meters as unable to penetrate the heavy atmosphere.
Judge William Boyce a pioneer Panhandle resident and former Court of Civil Appeals member is seriously ill at Herman hospital in Houston. An exploratory operation Monday is followed by rapid recovery with continued treatment at the Houston facility for the time being.
Charles Evans Hughes labeled the prohibition issue a sham battle during a St. Joseph speech. He traveled to Chicago to deliver a campaign message for the Republican ticket. Hughes, former secretary of state and 1916 presidential candidate, criticized Smith’s strategy to win by counting north and east votes to bolster dry positions in the south.

Colonel Charles A Lindbergh, given carte blanche by Mexican officials, began a bear hunting trip from the Hal Mangum ranch near Eagle Pass Texas after arriving last night. He dined in Piedras Negras before returning to Eagle Pass and heading to the ranch with Mangum and Sheriff Hausser.
Gas lines are being installed east and west of the Helium plant, one mile west of the Soney school, on Bush land per James A. Bush. Lines run to this side of Soney school house with more improvements planned. Betty Todd and daughter from Memphis visit Mrs. Fred Roane at 2305 Fillmore Street.
A production of The Ship by Amarillo Little Theater brought in over 1200 to aid treatment for crippled children on a waiting list. At least twelve youngsters will receive operations in Oklahoma City, funded by proceeds from last night’s performance. The city budget and tax outlook were also reviewed by auditor Thos. F. Cartwright, with a year end balance and a 1.56 tax rate noted.
United Press report from Phoenix on October 24 states three laborers died and a fourth is in serious condition after being overcome by gas from a broken sewer. They were bricking up a cesspool when the men unintentionally tapped the sewer. The deceased are J. D. Blaine James Bush and Merle Manker. John Clem was hospitalized with a possible recovery.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed Harry J. Leahy’s death sentence for murdering Dr. A. J. Ramsey of Mathis in Live Oak County. Leahy previously received 50 years in a Live Oak trial, then a death sentence in Williamson County after a retrial. Ramsey’s body was found in a shallow grave amid circumstantial evidence and a $10,000 contract offer.
Unsolicited checks of 100 each arrive for the Tri-State Fair debt payoff drive. Judge J C Hall of American State bank and Gulf Refining Co are the donors. About 9000 dollars subscribed as plans push forward to raise 15000 and clear indebtedness.
Two paintings titled The Village Blacksmith valued at $75 000 are shown in Amarillo with claims both are originals. The canvases depict two smiths at forges, signed Herbert De Mareau, and the piece notes the original dates to thirty five years ago. The story recounts a Col Ernest Thompson purchase and a Denver collection origin with the two canvases now in a White and Kirk department store.
