Fulton county grand jury prepared to return 14 additional indictments against Clinton S. Carnes former treasurer of the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board in connection with a $953000 shortage in board accounts. Earlier indictments cited embezzlement over $200000 and bonds set at $150000, increasing Carnes's total bond to $850009.
Dr Robert Mears a young Hollywood surgeon performed his own appendix removal three days earlier to test whether anesthesia caused most surgical shock. He walked today and said he would operate again if safe. Dr J Norton Nichols assisted as the appendix, in an unusual position, was located and freed while nurses and interns watched.
Amarillo taxi driver Lewis Avritt aged 24 who vanished two months ago after a trip to San Angelo is speeding toward Amarillo from Corpus Christi with his car. Arritt was released yesterday on orders from Corpus Christi Chief H L Gaither after being detained while retrieving the vehicle at employer Orville Benton’s instruction. He says he was held prisoner for 60 days by the man he left with and forced to travel a two month ramble with pistol threat, the man identified as McKellip.
Clarence Chamberlin landed at Le Bourget Field from Cherbourg after taking off at 7 a m and planned to refuel before continuing to Berlin. He is piloting an amphibian airplane and flown from the Leviathan.
The ledger records arrivals and departures at Amarillo Airport Corp Field with pilots J M Mor row and Matthew Watson, and passengers RC Schrader and Ray Reeder. Entries show flights to Colorado Springs Dallas San Antonio Denver Oklahoma City Dimmitt Lubbock Big Spring and other legs with times in October including October 6 to 12.
San Quentin officials, facing an unprecedented demand, must select a limited number of visitors to witness the October 19 hanging of William Edward Hickman the confessed kidnapper and killer of Marion Parker. Warden James Holohan said the process will be the most drastic in the prison’s history due to the flood of requests.
Anna Dimone a 19 year old abducted girl from Rockford Indiana was found in Janesville Wisconsin. Police say an Italian man abducted her and kept her in a grocery store overnight before bringing her to Janesville.
Reports say the Graf Zeppelin is making good progress from Friedrichshafen toward the United States. Weather is clear as the airship crossed the Madeira region and passed about sixty miles west of the island, with rough guidance toward Bermuda.
The Graf Zeppelin carries Dr. Robert Reiner a wealthy New York importer who has crossed the Atlantic 108 times and reportedly secured $1,000,000 life insurance before his next voyage. He is a close friend of designer and commander Dr. Hayo Eckener. Also aboard is Eckener’s son, one of the crew engineers.
George Riggs 40 a poultry farm owner died at WORT STOCKTON Texas after a gasoline lamp he was pumping air into exploded burning him fatally.
The log describes the airship Graf Zeppelin’s flight path starting from Friedrichshafen Germany at 2:00 a m through Constance Basel Lyon Montelimar and over Spain and the Mediterranean ending near Gibraltar before dawn on October 12. It notes midflight sightings by merchant ships Gloucester Castle and Euelid near Madeira.
The French submarine Ondine, 600 tons, overdue since Oct 1, was sunk by a Greek cargo boat off Oporto during the night of Oct 3. It carried three officers and forty men. Ondine left Cherbourg Oct 1 on an endurance trial and was last heard from Oct 8.
Mrs. Norma Ferner, 30, was found dead today in San Antonio hanging from a rafter with a rope and a handkerchief tied around her throat, possibly to protect her neck.
W L Speer Jr of City Drug Store No 1 returns from New Mexico and Oklahoma to state he supports Al Smith and not Herbert Hoover despite a prior Globe brief suggesting he supported Hoover.
