Arthur Brisbane notes a crowded mix of world events and sensational crimes. Avritt, an Amarillo taxi driver, was detained in Corpus Christi while trying to claim a service car left Amarillo with a passenger on August 14. The driver had reported traveling under guard for two months and sent wires directing returns to Fort Worth. Police seek guidance from Avritt’s employer Orville Benton as the case unfolds in Texas.
Commander Richard E. Byrd and a hand-picked crew sail from Pedro aboard the A. Larsen bound for New Zealand to rendezvous with four ships and push toward the Antarctic. The mission aims at two years of intensive scientific exploration and a possible South Pole air crossing. Byrd waves farewell with family and harbor crowds as the 15 000 ton whaler heads south at sunset.
The Tri-State fair fund drive reports gratifying results with a $250 contribution from Panhandle Lumber Co through John Hill, part of a $15,000 goal. Hill says debts from past years threaten the fair’s value and a clean slate is needed to support the exposition next year. Col. E. O. Thompson chairs the drive as subscriptions near half the target.
An overturned automobile on a lonely road near Shaftesbury England burned wreckage killed three men a woman and a child all unidentified. The disaster was discovered as the fire diminished during the night.
The body of RE F Burton 35 Lafayette Ind commander of the Indiana Legion tenth district lay in a morgue in San Antonio after a car crash last night 16 miles south of Dilley. Four others including Mr and Mrs G Malott of San Antonio and Mr and Mrs J C McParkland of Chickasha Okla were under a physician's care. Burton was an assistant professor at Purdue University and former Lafayette Post commander.
Two United States army officers Major W N Hensley Jr and Captain L D Crawford inspected the Amarillo municipal airport site with the airport commission. They called the project one of the best in the country and suited to government needs. The meeting included commission members J B E Biggs Wilbur Hawk J E B Hill John Cowan J B R Coe and Albert Randall with Col Harve Haines and W W Chilton. Hangar plans dominated the agenda.
The Transatlantic plane Columbia crashed shortly after takeoff from Roosevelt Field aiming for Rome. Pilot Roger Q. Williams and navigator Pietro Bonelli escaped unharmed. One wheel and wing strut broken, aircraft strained but did not overturn. Continued on page two.
The Tri-State Fair association presents Victor Herbert's Naughty Marietta at 8 p m in the Municipal Auditorium. Oklahoma and Texas papers praise the production. Tickets available at the Tri-State Fair office until 6 p m or at the auditorium after 6 p m, prices 75 cents to 2 50.
A neatly dressed Amarillo man was held by city police for investigation after pleading guilty to trespassing. He was arrested last night and pleaded guilty in city court this morning, then turned over to county authorities as the grand jury is expected to investigate. The complaint came from a North Amarillo family who said he followed them after peeping into their home window.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hamlen of Canyon were seriously injured in an automobile accident on the Amarillo Clovis highway yesterday. Mrs. Hamlen was rushed to St Anthony hospital by Griggs Thompson ambulance. Mr. Hamlen was later brought to the local hospital after initial Canyon treatment. Details of the crash are unavailable.

The American Legion national convention in San Antonio approved a report from the aeronautics committee calling for extending air lines into Central and South America. It recommends sending legion fliers to Washington to push for a separate bureau of aeronautics under a single defense department.
The Graf Zeppelin departed French territory and headed toward the Mediterranean at 3 30 P M signals from Saintes Marie Delamar marked the farewell. The airship carried 20 passengers and 49 crew with three Americans aboard Lt Commander Charles N Rosendahl Robert Reiner and Frederick Gilfillan and one woman passenger Lady Grace Drummond Hay. The craft was expected to arrive in the United States by Sunday morning.
Reno Livingston an 18 year old Lockney football player died in Lubbock after paralysis of the brainstem from football practice injuries. Scouts labored for seven hours with artificial respiration before death. Livingston was brother of Alma Jo Livingston a Globe proof reader.
A Denver coroner’s jury found pilot Charles F. Wilson responsible for the Derby, Colorado crash that killed Wilson and two Denver society girls, Mary Belle and Carol Begole. Witnesses testified crowding the cockpit prevented control, while the plane was airworthy and misjudged by Wilson after a bad air pocket.
