Minesweeper Magpie sinks near Korea. 21 missing

The navy reports the minesweeper Magpie was sunk by a floating mine two miles off the North Korean coast. Twenty-one men are missing, including Lt. (j.g.) Warren R. Person. In a Dodge City hearing, Evald and Diana Johnson pleaded not guilty to taking Tex Thornton’s car after his death at Park Plaza Motel. Roofers End Walkout After Pay Raise Pact

Fifty Amarillo roofers returned to work after a two day stoppage as union Local 254 United States Tile and Composition Roofers Damp and Waterproof Workers Association AFL struck a contract with four local firms. The deal raises base pay from 1.75 to 2.05 per hour, establishes an eight hour day and time and a half for overtime, and grants union recognition chartered 60 days ago. Midtown derailment and fire injures dozens at New York Central clash

A New York Central flyer traveling near a mile a minute collided with a derailed freight oil tank car causing an explosion in midtown Erie. About 40 to 50 people were injured, with some escaping through a lone exit as flames lit the sky. Firefighters and police aided rescues, and 12 passengers were admitted to hospital.
