Tax Leniency To Veterans
Internal Revenue collectors will show leniency to veterans who owe taxes due before or during military service. Discharged veterans have six months after discharge to pay back taxes under the Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act. If unable to pay, collectors will offer every consideration allowed by law, including partial payments. Many veterans owe no past taxes and excess service pay was not taxed. Veterans should consult the local IRS office on the post office third floor for help with returns and assistance.
