Ships Officers Call Off Strike Near Midnight Deadline
New York Oct 1 leaders of about 12 000 Atlantic and Gulf Coast ships officers called off a threatened strike hours before the deadline. Federal Mediator Bernard J Forman said employers representatives and the AFL Masters Mates and Pilots Association reached a wage and hiring procedure agreement. The accord provides a 6 percent across the board wage increase and a compromise hiring clause. Union officials said the vote by members would take about 30 days and during that period there would be no strike.
