Rubber stocks in serious jeopardy warned by Jeffers
Senator Jeffers testified before the Truman committee on nationwide gasoline rationing and rubber conservation. He warned that a 29,000 ton monthly consumption could exhaust stocks to 200 tons by Sept. 1 1943, near the Baruch minimum, unless drastic cuts occur. He outlined 1944 hopes for civilian tires and warned the synthetic program faces many ifs while stressing urgent conservation. President Roosevelt vetoed any postponement or ban and urged timely start Dec. 1, citing Baruch and the need to keep wheels rolling for wartime transport.
