Ten Die in Army Plane Crash Near Sioux City Air Base

Ten men were killed when an army plane crashed about half a mile southwest of the Sioux City air base during a routine flight around 2 15 AM. A guard was set to keep civilians away while Capt Fred Shick announced names and ranks would be released after next of kin notification.

Freight er sinkings amid Canton battle by Chennault squadron

A rapid Canton raid by Brig. Gen. Claire L. Chennault’s force destroyed two freighters totaling about 14 000 tons near the Pearl River. Bombers hit the main base with six tons of explosives while fighters claimed many enemy planes in the skies above, and several ships were set alight.

Windy Weather Looms Over Amarillo and West Texas

Amarillo and nearby areas will see strong winds this afternoon with rising temperatures and milder tonight. West Texas remains mild this afternoon with a colder Panhandle and South Plains tonight, windy conditions continuing. New Mexico reports mild afternoon, colder northeast portion tonight, and snow flurries in the north tonight. The 24 hour extremes include a maximum 50 and minimum 37 with noon at 62.

New Rationing For America This Week

The week brings new restrictions as the war mobilization expands. Coffee becomes coupon based, one pound every five weeks for adults. children under 15 get none. Gasoline rationing extends nationwide with four gallons per week for non essential users. Meat limits apply with 2 1 2 pounds weekly for adults and lower amounts for children. Bond sales target $9 billion.

Major David M. Jones of Winters Texas led a medium bomber force in a bold low level raid on Sfax Tunisia. The crew included Lieuts Guy Brently Houston Tex William Erwin near Houston Tex Windell Myers Tyler Tex M J Reisler Dallas Tex and Barnett C Wilson Denton Tex. Sergeant Virgil D Faust Amarillo Tex radioman and others from Texas participated. Faust known as Blondie worked at Ideal Paint & Body Works before service. His mother Mrs Ethel Faust lives at 410A Roberts Street and his wife Evie stays in Estelline.

Italians Arrested in North Africa Confinement Report

A radio Morocco bulletin noted 570 Italian troops muntined in North Africa. It did not specify if they were with the Axis army in Tunisia or the main Axis force in Tripolitania. The report said the Italians were arrested and sent to Italy for confinement in camps.

Vichy Radio said French resistance to British occupation of Reunion ended at 8 45 AM. British Imperial forces largely South African troops reportedly landed and seized Saint Denis La Reunion with resistance organized.
