George Harvey reports from Vienna that a C-53 passenger plane crashed in the Swiss Alps with 12 aboard. Rescue teams reached the survivors after days on the mountainside as crews dropped supplies and fighters scouted the area.
Industrial unemployment rose as the soft coal strike spread, with John L. Lewis facing contempt trial in Washington. Steel mills cut hours and payrolls, while more than 40,000 workers were idled and over a million may follow if the strike lasts. Mrs June Ivy Castronova Robertson said she will stay with Thomas A Robertson who is sought by Springfield police on two bigamy counts. Robertson, a steeplejack, has six marriages in five years including spouses from Corpus Christi and Spartanburg. He acknowledged six marriages from 1942 to 1946 across multiple states.
James Hogge Florey pioneer Panhandle grocer and president of Carlton Florey Wholesale Grocery Co died at 9 25 AM in St Anthony s Hospital after a long illness of leukemia He was born Oct 31 1892 in Venus Texas and moved with family to Midland later He came to the Panhandle about 1910 working from Amarillo and visiting Lubbock Floydada Plainview and Clovis NM to build a wholesale grocery empire
Benjamin Kolkey told Fillmore police a burglar broke into his home and stole six suits of clothes. He described one suit as especially valuable and noted a pocket contained $980 in cash. The incident was reported from Chicago on November 26.
Potter County grand jurors will begin an investigation into complaints of police beatings of prisoners. Foreman Bruce Autry said the jurors will meet at 10 a.m. in the county courthouse to examine the arrest of W. D. Russell last Friday. Three officers Sam L. Golden Charles A. Oates and Leonard Howards have been suspended. Chief Sid Harper and City Manager A. P. Hancock said they may be called as witnesses as investigations continue into the Russell arrest and related conduct. Capt J L King heads the police department probe with multiple witnesses ready to testify about alleged restraints and repeated slugs.
