Campus Guild invites Sweatt to apply for UT membership

The Campus Guild at the University of Texas invited Heman Marion Sweatt, a Houston Negro, to apply for membership in its Co-Op House provided he wins admission to UT Law School. President Jerome F. McGehearty said the move follows democratic principles and racial tolerance, and 41 of 55 members approved the resolution to support Sweatt’s case with 6 against.

Four Escapees Die in Wreck Near Loraine

Four escaped inmates from the Abilene epileptic farm were killed in a derailment west of Loraine in Mitchell County when 26 Texas and Pacific freight cars derailed at 12:35 A M. A fifth escaped inmate was injured and hospitalized in Loraine. Names of the deceased were David Rogers Athens Robert Noel Pampa Josh Cameron Titus County Clarence Gay Dickens County. Jeff Beller Paris was injured. Train officials blamed an explosion of a tank car for the wreck described as one of the West Texans worst freight accidents.

Air Crash Kills 22 in Costa Rica Tragedy

A Lacsa Airlines plane serving Costa Rica's interior crashed near San Jose at Santana, killing 22 people including two crew. Victims include R. H. Hamer of United Fruit Co and American pilot Victor Hughes. The Lacsa line is an affiliate of Pan American.

Sanford Youth Slain After Midnight Moonlight Chase

Esteal Ray Christian, 18, was shot and killed near Sanford after a chase with deputies pursuing a stolen 1940 Ford from Amarillo. Deputy Woody Sullivan faced a preliminary hearing and was released on $2,500 bond. District Attorney Bill McConnell arrives to investigate. The victim, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Christian, enlisted in the Army last March and the body awaits funeral arrangements at Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Home in Borger.

New Amarillo Airline Route Extension Announced

A new airline for Amarillo and an extension that nearly doubles the Amarillo network were announced. The Civil Aeronautics Board issued a certificate permitting the connection of Amarillo with Ince and approved Pioneer Airlines to add 18 more Texas cities and Central Airlines to operate the broader route system.

Bandit Is Captured Fort Worth Youth Linked to Carlisle Bank Robbery

A 19-year-old, Joe Doyle Banning, admitted taking part in an armed bank robbery in Carlisle, Inn. A woman was shot and $4,500 seized. Banning was arrested in Fort Worth after FBI and local officers watched his mother’s home for over 48 hours. An airmail package containing $2,110 arrived Tuesday and was intercepted by police after a telegram warned not to open it.

Man Shot by Guymon Sheriff After Courthouse Incident

Donald L. Barngrover of Guymon was critically wounded yesterday afternoon after fleeing the courthouse during questioning by Sheriff Ed Smith and County Attorney A. S. Dickson. Barngrover was taken to a Liberal hospital with an abdominal wound. Sheriff Smith said Barngrover fired a 22 caliber rifle at him, and Deputy W. T. Bratton was present.
