A nationwide blizzard and icy winds cripple transportation, with 34 deaths and widespread outages. Air travel halted from Cape Hatteras to Maine as storms threaten Atlantic coasts and federal advisories issue gale warnings.
Oklahoma City authorities opened a probe into a high school boys group called the Curiosity Club or C C with black shirts and drills. Milton Walser and Manford Ishmael led the club, which claimed to be non Communist or Fascist but leaned left.
Paris November 25 workers clashed with Mobile guards and police at the Renault plant as strikes spread across France involving about 100000 workers. Premier Daladier assumed interior powers to quell unrest while Albert Sarraut was reported in Turkey. The government deployed guards to stop sit downs and most plants opened. Renault stayed closed for repairs affecting about 130000 employees.
New York reports retail trade picked up pace in the week, though recovery remains slow. Dun & Bradstreet notes buying in newly opened Christmas departments boosted activity to near 1927 levels in most stores, with merchants hopeful for a holiday season equal to last year.
Ninety geisha girls in Tokyo and Yotsuya picketed tea houses demanding higher wages and shorter hours. Clad in ornate kimonos they walked cobbled streets as they protested for better pay and conditions.
M. D. Oden of Pampa died at St. Anthony's Hospital after being thrown from a speeding car four miles east of St. Francis on the Panhandle Highway. Alvin Johnson, the other occupant, escaped with minor injuries. Oden, about 35, was a brother-in-law of Amarillo attorney Riley Strickland. his wife was in California. Funeral arrangements are pending at Blackburn-Shaw.
Evacuation of women and children from Crestline in the San Bernardino Mountains began as the forest fire swept toward the town. Firefighters and CCC youths were rushed from across California to Crestline and Pinecrest to reinforce efforts amid forecasted westward movement and a backfire threat in Los Angeles County.
John Galloway, on the Embarcadero near Pier 9, attempted to lure a fish into his basket without hooks or line. He dipped, overreached, and fell in, was rescued to Harbor Hospital, and a fish reportedly flopped from his pocket as officials arrived.
An Rome telegraph dispatch reports Pope Pius XII suffered a second stroke after a morning heart attack. The Holy Father was unconscious for about 15 minutes according to the British News Agency dispatch.
Chiang Kai-Shek expressed dissatisfaction to the British ambassador over Britain’s Far East stance and signaled a showdown as Chiang urged assurances of aid. The meeting with Sir Archibald Clark Kerr followed talks in Hunan, with Chungking to set foreign policy in December as Britain weighs Japan’s influence.
Berlin reports a sweeping police roundup of Jews as Vienna arrests reach about 300. News cites government plans to dissolve Aryan Jewish marriages, ease divorce for Aryans, and bar those who divorce Jews from business and pensions. Jews in public buildings ordered to vacate. new partial Jewish parentage restrictions limit advancement in the military. Estimates show Jewish wealth sharply reduced by fines and riots, with bonds to replace remaining property.
New York November 25 mayor Fiorello LaGuardia removed himself from consideration as a presidential candidate. He said he wants only to serve as mayor and could not pursue a presidential nomination while holding the office.
Mr. Collman reports the cold spell returning with a strong north wind. Temperatures may fall to around 20 degrees tonight after a 24 degree low last night, with partly cloudy skies and continued cool conditions tomorrow.
London reports quote Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain stating there is no political or financial bar to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor returning to England. He met the couple after a conference with the former king and indicated no change to their allowance. Bolivian President German Busch proclaimed a state of siege nationwide. The move follows a 100 year dispute with Paraguay over access to the Paraguay River resolved Oct 11, but no reported unrest prior to the decree.
A Czech patrol attacked members of the Polish border delineation commission in Northeastern Czechoslovakia and two people were wounded. Tens of thousands of troops were concentrated along Ruthenia’s frontiers to deter any invasion by Poland or Hungary. Naval aircraft improved over the past year and the navy urged more funding to maintain air strength.
