Coldest Panhandle night in two years saw 8 degrees at English Field with 10 degrees by 10 am and a steady rise. Expect slightly warmer weather today and tonight in the Panhandle with continued cold on the South Plains. Fair and warmer tomorrow. Weather bureau did not issue an official forecast. Airport reading ran 2 to 4 degrees colder than downtown station. Last winter’s low was 11 degrees.
Oklahoma City officials investigated a blackshirt student movement named the Curiosity Club planning a bloodless revolution. Leaders Milton Walser and Manford Ishmael denied laws were broken while urging a classless, educated society. The group claims units in major cities and practices rifle and pistol shooting. Twenty four boys and nine girls joined, with Ishmael suspended from Classen High School for rule violations.
In Budapest the parliament recessed to November 30 after Premier Bela Imredy and his cabinet submitted resignations following a 115 to 94 defeat of a reform measure. Imredy sought a confidence vote. Regent Admiral Horthy conferred with leaders, initially declining to accept the resignation and later postponing action.
The government of Poland dissolves all Freemason lodges and confiscates their property to be used for public welfare. A five year prison term is set for organizing or joining lodges and for general strikes or walkouts affecting any industry. Farmers refusing produce delivery face five year terms.
In Paris Chamberlain may call on the Duke of Windsor during his official three day visit. A member of Chamberlain's suite said such a meeting would mark a step toward reconciling the former king with the British royal family and government. The ex-king and his American-born duchess reside in a Paris hotel and the prime minister reportedly sent his card upon arrival.
In Chicago on November 24 Earl Bushnell relinquished an option on a 15 pound Thanksgiving turkey. He offered to buy it if his estranged wife would drop divorce plans return to him and cook the bird. Mrs Bushnell refused and took temporary alimony.
Two mountain fires in the Santa Monica and San Bernardino ranges burned across 12 000 acres and destroyed 350 homes as property losses topped 2 000 000. The Santa Monica blaze near Topanga and Bel Air threatened celebrities while a San Bernardino fire hit Arrowhead Springs and nearby communities, forcing evacuations and killing one person indirectly.
Secretary of Commerce Roper states the United States is positioned for a sustained long term business upturn. He cites an expected 1938 national income near 65 billion dollars, a sharp rise from the prior year, with gains in steel activity, auto production, and construction awards. He notes improved confidence and better industrial-government labor cooperation amid wartime tensions.
US gunboat Monocacy with British and Japanese officers attempted contact with 200 plus foreigners marooned on Kuling Mountain since summer near Kiukiang. Refugees include 34 Americans and were reportedly safe amid ongoing fighting. An expedition left Kiukiang to possibly remove women, children, and invalids as 5,000 Chinese soldiers held the area.
Amarillo residents marked Thanksgiving with multiple observances across churches clubs and schools. Community groups coordinated baskets dinners and events while regional students joined a joint celebration. Meanwhile a Chicago stockyards strike neared a settlement after a Saturday conference between CIO Stockyards Union and Union Stock Yards and Transit Company officials.
Mrs. Marie Burckhalter, 44, quiet in county jail on Thanksgiving Day awaiting a summons to reenact the so called helping hand death of her husband Eugene V. Burckhalter, 47, chemical firm executive. His body was found in a fume filled car in the Hastings on Hudson garage.
Paris reports rapid deployment of eel helmeted guards from central and southern France to the North to eject 26,900 metal workers occupying plants. Disorders spread as 40,000 strikers, plus 14,000 coal miners and 4,000 railroad workers, join the protest against Daladier labor policy.
PANHANDLE NOV 24 Mrs FE E Carhart aged 75 who arrived with her husband shortly after the town began in 1887 died at 4 AM in a Pampa hospital after two weeks of illness. Born Sept 4 1863 in Terre Haute Ind she moved with her parents to Clarendon then to Panhandle. Survived by four children Nina Carhart J L Carhart H H Creek and George Taylor and a sister Mrs D M Young with grandchildren. Funeral at O Neal funeral home Panhandle.
Washington reports on a discussion by William McCormick of the American wildlife institute tracing the turkey’s origins. He declares the holiday fowl is foreign, not Turkish, likely Mexican in ancestry, with forebears in Ireland and a cross of ocellated and meleagris gallopavo varieties reaching Europe and America.
Rebel aircraft bombed Barcelona in a day of repeated air raids by mainly German planes. The harbor area suffered many bombs while anti-aircraft guns fired throughout the night. Eleven killed and 20 wounded in the harbor, raising 24 hour toll to at least 74 dead in 10 raids. Residents faced terror as raids continued about hourly, with fears of renewed efforts to destroy the Catalan capital.
The Finnish training ship Suomen Joutsen with 60 cadets and 27 crew aboard sent an SOS from the Bay of Biscay as it drifted disabled in a gale. A French warship was dispatched to assist.
Austin reports warn rabbit hunters about tularemia also known as rabbit fever. Health officer Dr George W Cox notes 75 cases this year versus 40 at the same date last year and urges rubber gloves when skinning rabbits to prevent infection.
Clara Ramirez believed to be 113 years old died at her home in Corpus Christi. Family records show birth in Mexico City in 1865 and arrival in Corpus Christi 93 years ago when the city was still a Mexican village.
Amarillo area fair and slightly warmer tonight and tomorrow with light scattered clouds. West Texas remains fair and cold, frost possible in the southeast tonight. New Mexico has no forecast for home days.
