U.S. Industry Surges Past 1929 Peak in October Production
U.S. industrial output climbed to a record 128 on the Fed index in October 1940, with September at 125 and 1929 as a reference. Despite gains, unemployment remains high, federal debt rises, and relief rolls total about 17 million. Defense spending and wage growth push income up, while defense mobilization is seen creating 3–4 million jobs by late 1941. Army conscription adds about 80,000 lines to the labor pool.
