United Press reports Berlin wireless messages noting a drifting lifeboat with one passenger believed dead. Other messages say a woman with child is nearby and two lifeboats remain missing as searches continue near the sinking Vestris. John Maynard Lumber Co, 800 W 5th, is cited in a third message.
Texas officials at the Texas Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teacher associations argued against popular election of county superintendents. State Superintendent Marrs claimed rural schools need professional leadership and urged stable school boards with staggered elections to reduce friction. He noted Texas spends more on public schools than any other function yet keeps them a minor issue.
Amarillo today started operation of a 200000 dollar sewage disposal plant built by Frank Parrott Construction of Salt Lake City. The activated sludge system serves a city twice Amarillo’s size and four workers will staff the plant located ten miles north of town.
Washington reports say national campaign costs were the highest in history totaling about 12 million dollars. House and Senate committees will finish their inquiry next month with expected rapid hearings to determine the total and procedures for completing the investigation.
Light minty rain fell over Amarillo and the Panhandle after a day of sun. Rail officials reported similar misting showers across the territory with Slaton noting light rain. Forecasts called for cloudy skies today and Wednesday with possible showers and a slight temperature rise from 47 to 54 degrees.
City officials prepare to choose the street for an underground crossing in North Amarillo a decision expected at tonight's commission meeting. About 100000 dollars is available for viaduct work but no funds were set aside for property damage.
