Federal investigators traced a global diamond smuggling operation to a light built Antwerp electrician Lamont and the gang at New York docks. Four men and a woman faced bail totaling 210000. others released to customs custody after gems valued at $100000 were found in oversized shoes.
The Ways and Means Committee heard calls to repeal excise taxes on theater admissions cigars and other nuisances. Ligon Johnson of the National Theatrical Association cited a 10 percent theater tax lowering road shows by a third and raising drama costs. A German 105 mm gun captured by American troops during World War I arrived at Hanson Post from Camp Mabry Austin and will feature in tomorrow morning’s parade. The piece, once hit by an Allied shell, will be displayed at the Legion home and later become the post’s permanent property.
William Knight and George Smith of Coleridge drowned when their automobile plunged over an embankment into the Missouri river at Mobara Nebraska last night. Neighboring residents report the accident occurred after their vehicle left the road during a drive. Investigators search for more details and possible cause.
The War Department announced Col. Charles A. Lindbergh is ordered to active duty at Selfridge Field Michigan from November 9 to December. He consents and will serve his annual reserve duty along with other army air reservists.
In Lakeview Oregon Lorena Trickey the rodeo queen stands trial for the murder of her lover Slim Harris. A note allegedly written by Trickey and handed to P M Bennett the prohibition officer was entered as evidence briefly before adjournment. Witnesses described a day of drinking and tension ending with Harris’s death during a car ride.
