Firemen Seek Share of State Pension Fund in Amarillo
Amarillo firemen have applied for a portion of a state pension fund, after the local pension board revived in 1941. The system provides for voluntary retirement at 55 after 20 years, disability pay, and uses a take from the wage at injury to fund disability benefits. The board, chaired by the mayor, sets partial disability pay and includes city and fire department members. The city previously paid 235 412 in fire insurance premiums, with the 1.6 percent entitlement of the $300 000 fund. Separately, a new Denton developed barley variety named Texas touts disease resistance and high yield for Central Texas farmers.
