Herman Adkins a battered faced miner testified about being jailed beaten by deputy sheriffs and driven across the state line in an alleged incident tied to the Harlan coal conspiracy case. The trial involves nineteen coal corporations and forty four individuals charged with conspiring to deny miners the right to organize under the Wagner Act. Adkins said his trouble began on September 26 1935 when the United Mine Workers called a strike in the Harlan field and he remained out even as many miners returned to work.

Four mothers named as winners received 75000 each from the Charles Vance Millar estate in Toronto. Executors say these checks are a first payment and more funds remain as the estate is liquidated. The recipients are Kathleen Nagle Annie Smith Isabel Maclean and Alice Timlock who bore nine children in the decade after Millar died on October 31 1936.
Federal agents examined a severed body recovered from the water tied with cop per wire. The head was detached and the hands bound. FBI laboratories in Washington tested the wire for identifying features. Police pointed to a possible earlier head removal before disposal.

The Plains area reports widespread hopper infestation with many on lawns and vacant lots. Potter County records a quart of migratory hoppers found in a courthouse fruit jar as officials warn the infestation could escalate if not controlled before they develop wings.
