He rose from a British saloon-keeper’s son to diamond and gold magnate in South Africa, trading with Boers and natives amid shifting fortunes. Los Angeles dispatch reports a long rumored party linked to deputy district attorney David H. Clark, now accused of killing Charles Crawford and Herbert Spencer. Longview Texas farmers resist oil drilling on peanut patches. W E Jones, county surveyor, reports tenants refused access by Magnolia Oil Co to a farm on the Hooper survey in Lathrop area. A tenant paid $25 damages before work stopped. Mid Kansas Co also located on Jones property.

The Tri State Fair Association prepares for night auto races Friday night and Saturday at the fairgrounds with 50 000 watts of illumination. One of only three illuminated tracks in the country, joining Wichita and Los Angeles. Night races start 8 30 p.m. and 2 30 p.m. for the matinee. admission is 1.00, or 0.50 with complimentary tickets from the association offices.
Johnny Miller of Poughkeepsie barnstorms across the continent in the first autogyro west of the Mississippi. He plans to reach Amarillo tonight with stops en route to Los Angeles for a summer stay, marking the first autogyro sighting in Amarillo at English Field.
Virgil Kirkland faced a second murder trial in Valparaiso Indiana with the prosecution seeking the death penalty for murder by rape in the Arlene Draves case at a November party. Defense argues Draves drank and fell to her death of her own choosing and Kirkland acted to aid her in distress.
J L Maddox chairman of the locating committee for Trans continental and Western Air will arrive in Amarillo Tuesday to confer with city officials about concentrating all operating units into one large depot at a mid western point. He wired Mayor Thompson that he would arrive here Monday or Tuesday and his visit is expected to influence the board of directors on the location. Amarillo has bid to house the airway company's general officers and shops, a move considered important to the city's growth and prosperity.
New York police announce the Vivian Gordon case solved after a confession by driver Harry Schlitten. Four men are under arrest including Harry Stein and Samuel Greenberg for murder, with two others as witnesses. Isidore Lewis aided hiring the car used in the fatal ride to Van Cortlandt Park. The killer lured Gordon with claims of diamonds.
Washington May 25 The association argues illicit liquor has joined major industries with spirits beer and wine valued at 2.848 billion dollars for 1929. It cites per capita consumption rises from 1.44 to 1.65 gallons for spirits and .53 to .90 for wine while beer falls from 20.69 to 6.5 gallons. Prices used average 11 dollars per gallon for liquor 50 cents for beer and 2.30 for wine.
The Board of Temperance, Prohibition and Public Morals of the Methodist Church said no one knows how much liquor Americans drink. The statement comes amid ongoing debate on prohibition with no verifiable consumption data available.
Trial of Will Moore, a negro charged with murder in the slaying of Monte Pete Moore at a downtown Amarillo hotel was postponed by Judge Henry 8. Bishop until next Monday. Absence of a special prosecutor and eyewitness prompted the delay as a large venire was examined.

A post winter storm swept Sea peak stranding seven pilots aboard a plane near Bellefonte Pennsylvania on May 25 amid heavy snow and high winds. The incident disrupted air traffic and prompted rescue efforts by local authorities.

Austin residents saw empty legislative halls as the 131 day session closed with lawmakers returning home awaiting a probable special session next month. The forty-second legislature passed a three cents per package cigarette tax and title validation for West Texas land owners with mineral rentals and bonuses. Governor Sterling did not veto any bill while the session was in order.
A committee led by J. Ray urged Mayor Ernest Thompson to submit refunding bonds to a public vote and to require competitive bids at sale. They argued the city should pay no 5 percent commission, while the mayor defended it as covering issuance expenses. The panel would back an election if called.
Federal Judge John Knox restrains Primo Carnera from fighting Jack Sharkey at Ebbetts Field on June 10. Walter O'Brien a Marble Company executive was found wounded in his office by a stenographer. He is improving at a Houston hospital as attendants described. The shooting occurred last week and O'Brien remains under medical care.
Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll known as Amos and Andy visited the Catoctin Maryland camp of Secretary to the President Lawrence Richey. Reports say Republicans consider hiring the team for Hoover's 1932 campaign. Richey denied the suggestion.
First presentation of The Sheik's Niece tonight at the Municipal Auditorium marks a pre ceremony entertainment series by the Khiva Shrine Temple. A musical comedy with a defined plot and many comedy situations features a large chorus and musical numbers. Tickets cost 1, reservations at Hurst's on Eighth Avenue and Polk Street with advance sales strong. A sixteen piece orchestra under Irving Tolzien leads the show.

Police report a pistol duel in Marine Park Brooklyn left Dr Joseph T Loughlin 39 dead with three bullets. The surgeon quarreled with his wife and stock broker Howard Bridgetts his second cousin and supposed challenger tried to mediate before they reportedly stepped outside and fought. Leon Sachter, family friend, arrived to settle the argument as the pair left together for appointments.
