Fair and warmer tonight and Saturday across Amarillo and vicinity. West Texas shows fair and cooler conditions in the extreme southeast, warmer in the Panhandle tonight, with Saturday partly cloudy and warmer. Temperature extremes through 1 PM today reach a maximum of 57 and a minimum of 46 degrees.
Panhandle Grain Dealers Association closed its two day convention at Municipal Auditorium shortly after 1 PM. Speakers denounced government interference in markets and urged adherence to the age old law of supply and demand. An unusually light docket allowed the sessions to finish ahead of the planned schedule.
The Senate voted 22 to 5 to extend the regular session to next Tuesday noon, with House concurrence needed. Both houses approved the free conference report on the cement sulphur peddlers tax bill, setting a five cent per barrel cement levy and raising the sulphur tax to 75 cents. Educational appropriations were adjusted, reinserting new buildings and freezing salary cuts, while redistricting plans faced Senate resistance despite House approval.
Judge James C. Wilson sentenced Frank Barefield James T. Rayford and G W Boyd alias Caleb Sanders to five years each in Leavenworth with three years suspended two years to serve. They were charged with fraudulent use of mails involving forged bills of lading and drafts defrauding banks and firms including the National Bank of Commerce Amarillo of about 35000 under the Barefield Grain Company.
Employed by the city, engineers from Black Veatch of Kansas City began a three week appraisal of Amarillo Gas Company's distributing system. E B Black and two additional engineers arrived from Oklahoma City to examine all physical property, line sizes, ages, and conditions. The firm will testify on value before a jury of award.
Dallas May 22 United Press H J Klingler vice president and general sales manager of Chevrolet Motor Company predicted an industrial upturn gaining momentum will become nationwide by September He cited motor sales as an index and said the North Atlantic seaboard was the brightest current economic spot while the Pacific coast also showed economic health as a recovering region
William Maxberry a 16 year old Waco High School freshman was fatally wounded when a small calibre pistol went off as he and Richard Thompson 16 examined it at the Thompson home before school. The coroner ruled the shooting accidental. Maxberry was son of Homer T Maxberry former ministerial student at Baylor University.
Henry Ansley reports the Globe special train returning from Mexico City after four days of travel. Trippers bought serapes earrings and mantillas as souvenirs while joking about mastering Spanish. Plans include a Tri-State Fair reunion and showings of several thousand feet of movie footage.
J L Maddox, chair of the locating committee for Transcontinental and Western Air, plans a visit to Amarillo next Monday or Tuesday. Officials in Amarillo anticipate bringing the airline’s general offices and operating depot to the city, a move the chamber of commerce frames as a major growth booster. A telegram to Mayor Ernest Thompson from Los Angeles alerted of Maddox’s planned visit amid a New York board decision pending earlier news.
T P Roberts of the O R W Oil Co in Dallas leads independents in urging a temporary shutdown of crude oil production in the United States. The plan proposes voluntary import restrictions and a roughly one year halt until surplus stocks, including about 500 million barrels in storage, are drawn down.
Tickets for the Shrine musical comedy Sheik's Niece at the Municipal Auditorium are on sale at Hurst's Jewelry Store on Eighth Avenue and Polk Streets. Patrons with seats are urged to reserve immediately as both performances are expected to reach full capacity.
W. Martin of Vernon was elected president of the Panhandle Grain Dealers Association as the annual convention adjourned at Municipal Auditorium at 1:30 this afternoon. Harry Kearns of Amarillo was re elected vice president and Joe Morris of Amarillo was re elected secretary treasurer. Directors named include J. F. Connally of Claude Burton Thornton of Lockney O D Dinwoody of Hart and H G Heaton of Dalhart.
The Southwest Shippers' Advisory Board session endorsed keeping grain markets and futures, then attacked highway motor transport. It urged all for hire vehicles to be common carriers under state and federal regulation and called for coordinated rail and truck transportation to serve the public interest.
District Attorney Edward W. Thomerson Deputy Sheriff Bob Barnett and Bill Black along with Miss Christine Upchurch travel to Joplin Mo to interview Jim Creighton held on a murder charge in Webb City in connection with Coyne Hatten slaying and sought for Canyon bank robbery. Creighton identified pistol used in Hatten killing as the same weapon taken from Elbert Dailey in Hastings Neb bank robbery. Creighton waives preliminary hearing and remains held without bond.
Daniel Mills 29, an amateur pilot and Youngstown fire salesman, fell 700 feet from an open cockpit plane near Niles while returning from Cleveland. Witnesses say Mills appeared to jump, while his brother and widow doubt self harm. coroner's inquest to be held in Warren. Pilot William Jones recalls sudden lurch and Mills missing from the craft.
Weather across central West Texas brings widespread damage from hail and high winds. Purves Dublin Albany and Vernon report damaged roofs, overturned tops, and flooded streets while Abilene Shackelford and Stephens counties suffer crop losses and 34 degree May chill.
Army airplanes from Dayton Ohio formed the first provisional air division and flew to refueling points including Buffalo Rochester Washington Middletown and Butler with over 500 planes in clear weather. One aircraft nosed over at Rochester during landing causing minor damage. Planes expected at New York area fields by midafternoon as airmen praised the precision of the operation.
Fairfield Air Depot Ohio May 21 500 army planes began taking off at 405 AM CST to defend the Atlantic coast. First to leave was the 101st pursuit group with Kelly Field detachments refueling at Buffalo before continuing to Valley Stream New York. The exercise tests moving large airship bodies and protecting the sector from Maine to Washington with New York City as the hub.
Los Angeles May 22 A former deputy district attorney is held without bail on charges of the double murder of Charles Crawford a politician and Herbert Spencer a newspaperman in Crawford s Hollywood office Three shots were fired and the Martinez powder test indicated Crawford handled the gun Clark the suspect denies guilt and says he has no further statement Baron Fitts said a thorough investigation would be made of the events in the room where Clark Crawford and Spencer were closeted together

The Standard Oil Company of Indiana announced that its subsidiary Standard Crude Oil Purchasing Company has completed a crude oil contract in East Texas and will not make further purchases at the present time.
Wharton Texas May 22 J W Frailey a traveling salesman was burned to death when his car overturned on the highway near Kendleton and caught fire. Bystanders saw the vehicle ablaze and Frailey's body was found at the wheel with the license plates identifying the car.
Fifty nine aliens escorted by U S immigration inspectors were deported from Kansas City to Mexico. A portion of the group had recently been released from Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary in Kansas.
Mayor Ernest Thompson announced the Petsch bill and an amendment by Sen. Walter Woodward clear the way for Amarillo to condemn the Amarillo Gas Company's distributing plant for municipal operation without a voter referendum. The Woodward amendment exempts Amarillo from the Petsch requirements until 1932, aligning with House Bill 981, and a public hearing is set for Friday to review petitions and appoint appraisers.
