In Kansas City on May 22 a preliminary hearing for George W. Welsh Jr. revealed the defense may try to portray the Leila Adele Welsh murder as the act of a sadist. In Chicago a criminal court jury convicted Clarence McDonald 17 of murdering his high school sweetheart Dorothy Broz also 17 in a movie theater slaying. The jury imposed life imprisonment after a nine day trial in which the defense argued he was insane.
The Federal Security Administration will establish a central CCC headquarters in San Antonio Texas for all camps in the army eighth corps area. About 38 camps across southwestern and western states fall under this area after the ongoing camp curtailment program ends.
Forrest Hawthorne 32 substituted a motor driven scooter for his car to save gas and was arrested today in Ephrata for drunken driving after zig zagging down Main Street.
Cairo dispatch reports continued patrol activity along the Libyan front. The central sector communique notes British Empire artillery engaged a small group of enemy vehicles as patrols press the line.

In Little Rock a rental car driver traveled in reverse through three intersections before being stopped by Traffic Bureau officers. He forfeited a $10 bond on a reckless driving charge and was surprised the meter registered reverse travel as well.
Moscow dispatch reports Germany urges Vichy to agree to Axis occupation of Tunisia and defense of the French empire, arguing Britain and the United States seek to seize Tunisian ports. The Tass news agency notes German pressure as Allied plans allegedly threaten North Africa.
Memphis May 22 WPA checks travel on trains and buses in 100 metropolitan areas to determine how much is unnecessary. District Administrator Holt Peel said the information is being compiled for the Office of Defense Transportation, probably pointing toward travel rationing.
A protest against Texas intrastate shipment rates was filed with the Interstate and Texas Railroad Commission by W. R. Scott. He argued the rates favor Texas shippers over Kansas City and Oklahoma rivals and could trigger nationwide tariff revisions.
