Tokyo radio dismissed President Roosevelt's Tokyo raid report as a ploy to divert attention from Allied setbacks in the Coral Sea and carrier losses. The broadcast cited Doolittle’s remarks as evidence of a fictional raid and questioned the medals awarded to crews.
Elijah Jackson Blankenship 78 retired farmer died at 9 30 last night in a local hospital. He was a West Amarillo Christian Church member residing at 315 East 22nd Avenue. Survived by two sons A L Blankenship J P Blankenship of Amarillo. three daughters Vesta Reynolds Vera Beggenson Velva Simmons. a brother George W Blankenship of Gainesville. five sisters Annie Kitchens Rosa Davis Lucinda McDearman Margaret Smoot Lila Davis. Funeral tomorrow at 1 pm Blackburn Shaw Memorial Chapel with J Tolly Corder minister. Graveside services follow at 4 pm in Lockney.
On its sixty first birthday the American Red Cross pledges mercy in wartime through aid at battlefronts, blood plasma donations, and relief to homeless families. The observance stresses deeds over celebration as nurses and volunteers comfort soldiers and their families worldwide.
Members of the Sam Houston Junior High School Band and their families will hold their annual picnic Saturday afternoon. They will meet at 3:30 at the school after a Band Parents Association meeting that elected officers for next year.

President Roosevelt drew serial number U-2 in the fourth registration drawing of his selective service board. Chairman James D. Hayes said U-1 was drawn by Steve Visalankos, a peanut vendor in front of the executive mansion. The President, as commander in chief, is classified 1-0 for armed forces.

L H Cedar Puckett reports Amarillo’s USO drive aims for about 22000 aided by 10 teams and many women workers. Most funds support the Service Men's Civic Center while a possible city lease or title to the old weather bureau site near Seventh Avenue and Taylor Street is studied for a new USO club.
Temple, a fifteen year old elephant at the Kansas City Zoo, faced possible execution after repeated vicious acts toward its mate Ararat. Zoo director William T. A. Cully recommended the humane death if painless, with shrine officials not opposing the measure. The note mentions a large hemisphere population figure.
The navy and marine corps will begin enlisting black sailors and marines on June 1. The marines will enroll one battalion during June and July and keep them inactive until a training center is ready. Secretary Knox said facilities can handle about 1,000 negroes per month and recruits will receive eight weeks of training at Great Lakes with chances to qualify for vocational schooling.
