Marooned motorists start picking their way forward

Hundreds of travelers remained stranded in Amarillo overnight as high water closed major highways and disrupted bus rail and air travel. By morning many motorists were abandoning enforced stops and packing to continue, with hotels near capacity and rail lines slow to clear.

Actor Louis Hayward and party were stranded en route to Hollywood in Texas as high water forced multiple stops. They stayed overnight at Del Camino Motel in Amarillo and planned to wait until routes cleared before continuing to New York and then back to Los Angeles for additional horror scenes.

Creek Flood Forcing Plainview Evacuations

Floodwaters from Running Water Draw threatened Plainview as 6.39 inch rainfall caused water to swell toward the city. Evacuation crews moved trailers and furniture from vulnerable homes while Police Chief Hoyt Curry and Sheriff Ted Andrews coordinated response by radio as the rise neared mid afternoon.

Truman rails at MacArthur and Taft over war talk

President Truman attacked General MacArthur and Senator Taft for advocating an all out war. He warned such a move would cost 10 to 20 times more than arming and containing Korea. He urged support for price and rent controls and proposed a two year extension of these measures. He emphasized the need for allies and warned against politics influencing defense and foreign aid decisions. He spoke in the Statler Hotel with Mrs. Truman to standing applause.

Plan to move Arm strong to 100th District sparks talk

Hazlewood announced a recall plan after studying public sentiment on shifting Arm strong from the 47th to the 100th District in the eastern Panhandle. He indicated a majority opposed the change and that signatures and opposition from local officials pushed back the proposal. Flooding worsened across Plainview and Running Water Draw with 6.39 inches in 48 hours, stranding travelers and washing out rail lines and highways. Two Oklahoma youths were reported missing in Palo Duro Canyon as rain and high water halted travel and communications.

Tiny traveler stranded but she has fun

Little Sonji Massey eight year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Jimmy Massey of Clovis was stranded when a Santa Fe train could not reach Waynoka Oklahoma due to a washout. Special officers took her off the train and she spent hours at Bea S Shoppe in Polk Avenue making friends and dressing up with beads. She rode back to Clovis in the evening still upbeat about the unexpected adventure.

Reds threaten UN lines on East Central front in Korea

Around May 17 Tokyo report says 96,000 Chinese attacked along a 25 mile east central sector while 25,000 more Reds gathered in the Pukhan Valley. Allied forces countered as waves felled a hilltop defense and Chinese dug near the Han Pukhan river junction amid air and artillery barrages.

Pinch to Steel consumer durable goods shift

Edwin T. Gibson and Charles Wampler announced plans to cut steel for consumer durable goods by one third below pre Korean levels. The National Production Authority will allocate steel, copper and aluminum for defense starting July 1, with civilian needs falling sharply. Third quarter demand for military and industries totals 135 percent of supply, while auto and durable goods may receive about 10 percent of the total.

Arrested in Theft After Police Chase

James Shofner age 26 was arrested after a two block foot chase with city police during which shots were fired. He faced a theft charge for a May 11 spray paint gun theft and entered a not guilty plea with bond set at 500. He was jailed in Potter County Jail awaiting trial.
