Amarillo prepares for Armed Forces Day with 7:55 a m siren start and a 11 a m parade on Polk Street featuring bands floats and marching units. An air show over Amarillo includes B-36 stratobomber T-28 trainer and jet aircraft with participation from bases in three states. Flags available at local posts and shops. a new flagpole atop the Amarillo Hotel will fly the flag again.

Washington May 18 The White House said President Truman first considered firing Gen Douglas MacArthur last August after he wrote a controversial letter to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Short said Truman had this incident in mind when he noted he had considered relieving MacArthur for about a year He clarified his timing saying he began considering after naming MacArthur commander in chief of United Nations forces MacArthur had sent a VFW letter about Formosa last August which Truman ordered withdrawn and the letter was published anyway The remark prompted calls for a wider Senate inquiry with Senator Bridges noting new issues in the investigation

UN Proposes Worldwide Embargo on China and Korea
