Friona High School Fire Destroys Building

A fire in Friona destroyed the high school building with $100,000 plus damage estimated. The gym survived due to combined effort of Friona and Hereford fire departments. No injuries were reported as flames rose from the north end around 2 o'clock.

Amarillo Sees Historic Flooding With 7.69 Inches In 24 Hours

Amarillo faced a record flood as rainfall mounted into the second day. The Globe News gauge at Ninth and Harrison logged 7.69 inches at noon and 5.71 inches from 9 yesterday to 9 this morning, well above the 53 year high. Previous single day records include 4.38 inches in May 1936. Weatherman H. C. Winburn noted prior notable rain in 1949 and other low-precip months with multiple days over an inch. The month’s all time high stands at 9.76 inches from June 1923.

Becks Loose Hose After Ground Tug of War

In Ann Arbor on May 16 Dr and Mrs H O Beck recovered their garden hose after a week long ordeal when suction drew several feet of hose into the ground while watering a willow tree. Neighbor milkman Fathor Nordman hauled the hose free with a single mighty pull.

South Korean Officers on Trial for Withdrawing Troops

Pusan May 16 Lt Gen Chung Il Kwon said more than ten South Korean officers face military trials for withdrawing troops without orders during Chinese Red attacks last month.
