Lubbock Texas May 14 Continuation of expansion program brings many new cities and counties into the organization strengthening of the district group and more effective use of the referendum were urged by President Charles E Coombes in his address before the thirteenth annual West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention. The committee on elections reported that 77 new cities were added.
A large delegation from Amarillo and city officials left for the 1932 Commerce convention in Lubbock with Mayor Vernon promising a strong bid. The town is decorated with placards and banners as the municipal band prepares to support Amarillo’s bid and celebrate the effort.
The year saw 48 new directors added bringing total to 773 with 107 cities affiliated. President Coombes noted at least 75 more towns could join. He said the organization would take in towns to address problems in West Texas cities.

The Federal grand jury returned eighteen indictments this morning with eight defendants jailed. Albert Sizemore faces a Dyer Act charge for transporting a stolen car from Berger Texas to Tucumcari New Mexico on February 3. Fred Langford, Robert Drake, James McCullough, A L Craig, C L Miller, Arthur Bond and others linked to whiskey possession and transport are named. Prosecutions begin next Monday before Judge James C. Wilson as the grand jury continues.
A charter was granted to the Amarillo Credit Association of Amarillo with no capital stock. Incorporators are C. M. Williams H. M. Russell and R. D. Kirk. The group organized May 6 with 30 local firms as members and aims to educate the public on credit purchasing provide members with information on credit matters and supervise advertising media.
Arguments in the trial of Ralph Fessler charged with possession of liquor were concluded at noon today and the case was given to the jury after the noon recess. The raid by Deputy Constables Odom and Williams on May 2 led to the confiscation of liquor. Fessler’s attorney requested a suspended sentence. Watch repairing. Hurst Jewelry Co.
Excavation started for a third 500000 bushel unit at the Burrus grain elevator in Northeast Amarillo. When completed, total capacity will reach about 2100000 bushels with the first unit at 1000000 and second at 500000 bushels. The third unit is due to receive grain by July 1, hiring nearly 300 workers. The addition extends the elevator to 800 feet long and 100 feet high, south of the second unit, matching the first two units. Announcement came from construction superintendent 8 FP Hoehn.
Amarillo and a 60 member Senior High School band travel by auto from the Chamber of Commerce at 7:30 am to Morse for an old-time western jubilee marking the Santa Fe Railway completion to Spearman and Rock Island line opening to Morse. A parade opens the event and thousands are expected.
Governor Ross Sterling plans to ask for a one week extension beyond May 22 to push key measures. The priorities include passage of an oil proration bill and a constitutional amendment for $212 million in road bonds. Rep. Walter Beck indicated another vote attempt to submit the bond amendment after a 95 to 46 defeat, with Beck voting no to allow reconsideration.

Brig. General Leroy Eltinge 59 commander of the 14th infantry brigade and 89th division of regular army reserves died after a brief illness in a local hospital. He had been ill since Saturday and passed away last night.
In Oklahoma City a 20 year old Indian girl fled after a pistol battle in a drug store. Patrolman R A Sanders wounded bandit Don Prince, who lay near death at Wesley Hospital. The bandit’s companion escaped with about 40 dollars.
A Texas navigation district for the Trinity River was assured as Rep. Walter Beck of Fort Worth and Dallas Fort Worth legislators were invited to the governor's office at 3 PM to witness the signing. The district would organize to pursue federal construction of a nine foot barge canal from Galveston Bay to Fort Worth.

About 11,000 unemployed United Mine Workers in Southeastern Kentucky threaten to act if aid does not arrive. National guardsmen patrolled from a new base in Harlan as Col. Daniel M. Carrell shifted operations to the county seat. Governor Flem D. Sampson and mine owners are accused of breaking faith, with tensions rising after a miner named O. M. Hicks faced arrest for threatening a deputy during a mine ejection.
City employees solicit sign pledges to condemn and operate The Amarillo Gas Company's distributing system. Cards urge citizens to back the city commission in the gas fight, with over fifty distributed Wednesday to the public.
The Globe reports that the quoted E. L. Roberts who attended the commission meeting and said an election was unnecessary was not the E. L. Roberts of Roberts Olver Lumber. Mr. Roberts asks The Globe to clarify he was not present at the meeting.
City employees were asked to obtain signatures and return them to City Hall. Pledges of support for the city commission in its bid to obtain cheap gas were solicited weeks ago by City Manager Bill Durham after gas system connections were filed but before the plan to acquire the gas company was public. Mayor Ernest O Thompson cited 8 264 signed cards as evidence the commission acted under the people’s orders at Tuesday’s meeting.
Darrell Crook, 12, left Butler Oklahoma unaided to find his brother in Los Angeles. Police found him in Amarillo near the Santa Fe station after a days long journey. He was in the traffic squad room at police headquarters awaiting contact with his mother. He said his father is dead.

Augus tine Courtauld, a British scientist, described being two months buried beneath ice and snow in an Igloo at Angmagssalik Greenland. Rescued by members of the British arctic air route expedition led by Captain Albin Ahrenberg and H. G. Watkins after weeks of travel, Courtauld appeared unshaven and worn from a long diet of seal meat as rescue teams followed the ice crags to the wintering site.
