Torpedo sinks U.S. merchant ship off Africa in April

Survivors say nine of 65 African trained crew members died after a torpedo hit the American ship off the west coast of Africa in early April. A tenth crewman died en route to port. Thirty-six crew and eight navy gun crewmen arrived at Norfolk aboard a passenger vessel with missionaries and other Americans. Captain Turkef G. Selness of Brooklyn reported the ship sank at dawn on April 3 after hours of attempting to keep it afloat.

Richard R Pool Held in Denver on Impersonation Charges

Richard R. Pool was held in Denver on charges of impersonating an FBI agent and a deputy U S marshal. He allegedly swindled Amarillo resident J L Williams out of about 3000 dollars. Pool had been living in Albuquerque. Federal court in Amarillo opens Monday with cases likely set for June.

Cadet Garland A Dishman Killed in Plane Crash

Cadet Garland A. Dishman, 22, of Okmulgee Oklahoma, died when his army training plane crashed near Sacaton about 40 miles southeast of Phoenix during a routine night navigation flight from Phoenix to Tucson. The Lake Field public relations office said eighty six other ships completed the flight safely.

Laval warns U S on Martinique policy in Washington

Producers Grain Corp Holds Annual Meeting

In Amarillo 300 plus stockholders attended the fourth annual session of Producers Grain Corp a cooperative. L T Hugh of Plainview urged planning for postwar periods with growth in production distribution and processing. N P Nelson stressed storage for the 1942 wheat crop and lumber for storage. The financials showed about 350000 in assets and 52000 in abilities. The noon luncheon awarded 4-H members. Directors election slated for the afternoon with talks by James A Patton and James H Davis.
