A reader criticizes General MacArthur and wartime propaganda, questions American logistics for a large invasion, and weighs Britain’s balance of forces. The piece argues the war is a fight for survival beyond comforts and criticizes older military views while praising patriotism and Roosevelt.
Thousands of dealers in automobiles trucks tires and other rationed goods may get financial relief under a Roosevelt sign in measure. It directs the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to advance loans or purchase rationed articles outright if dealers cannot sell them after 18 months.
The speaker at the Amarillo Country Club delivered grim military analysis criticizing leaders and media for pessimism. He argued Japan fooled powers, Germany would need massive reinforcements, and a southern invasion across multiple points would require about 500 divisions and eight million men, implying years of conflict.
Miami reports that a Dutch merchant ship was torpedoed by two U boats causing a raging fire. Fourteen sailors died, twenty saved including the master Capt. HK Johnson. Survivors say two torpedoes struck nearly simultaneously and a second vessel was also sunk with three men lost.
The Amarillo Real Estate Board submitted a city hall resolution urging sewer installation in sparsely settled districts. The committee cites over 10 000 vacant lots with few connections as bids for thousands of feet of pipe near the taxpayer approved project. Charles Holt and Hugo Loewenstern served on the committee.
In reply to a Commons question, Clement Attlee cites British Empire war losses totaling 183550 in the first two years, with 48973 killed, 46363 wounded, 58458 POWs, and 29756 missing. Also notes Cuba exported 45000000 pounds of tomatoes in seven months.
Federal Security Administrator Paul V. McNutt urged Congress to create dependents’ financial aid for armed forces families. The House was to consider a Senate bill raising base pay for enlisted personnel in the army navy and marine corps with a $42 minimum for privates and equivalent ranks and higher pay for the lowest commissioned officers.
On May 12 4 waiving his deferment State Senator Marshall Formby of the 30th district is serving as a buck private. He asked to be mustered into the selective service group from Dickens County. Two other Texas senators have entered military service Franklin Spears of San Antonio and Vernon Lemens of Waxahachie.
A jumble of brief notices includes a woman seeking a caller from 1019 Johnson Street, a person wanting a home for a young male dog at 1216 Harrison Street, a cowboy job inquiry from Bill Wood of Bar L Ranch Amarillo, a Pleasant colored woman seeking housework work with references at 1204 Bivins Street, five Persian kittens for give away at 1028 Bowie Street, and a lost silver ring with a black stone found in Amarillo.
Chicago May 12 Prices of hogs and cattle shipped to slaughtering centers appear to be frozen within ceilings now in effect to stabilize wholesale markets. Livestock experts say the anti inflation limits likely constrain live cattle and hog prices, while retail meat ceilings take effect Monday. Mutton and lamb remain exempt.
United Press reports a Shanghai naval spokesman said bad weather prevented a knockout victory in the Coral Sea air battle. In Washington the Senate passed a bill to create a women's auxiliary army corps by 38 to 27, rejecting limits to United States service. Churchill warned air borne invasion is possible but a German landing would be a hornets nest. Helsinki said Soviet attack on Louhi sector failed, preserving Finnish-German lines.
No official word on Martinique reaction to the American proposal to Admiral Robert. Reports suggest Axis pressure on Vichy and Laval's possible move to reconquer French colonies with German help.
Harvey Bush 55 year old stock man farmer of Mangum Oklahoma died in a local hospital after being brought for treatment. Survivors include his widow a son Otho Bush of Russell Oklahoma and two daughters Mrs B J Drewery of Kaufman and Mrs Ira McNeese of Stanton. The body is at N S Griggs and Sons Chapel with arrangements not yet completed.
The city commission will consider routine business including bids to supply several thousand feet of sanitary sewer pipe and a contract to drill test water wells. The meeting is scheduled for 8 o'clock tonight.
Members of the Panhandle Outdoor Sportsmen's Club will meet at 8:30 tomorrow night in the Amarillo Hotel for a regular monthly session and to view a colored movie Battling Bass furnished by Field & Stream. Announcement by club secretary E R Kral.

The Universal Concrete Pipe Company begins production at its Amarillo plant on a seven acre site near the Tri State Fairgrounds. The facility, headquartered in Waco with another plant in San Antonio, will continue after the war and produce sewer and irrigation pipe for an ordnance project in Texas.
