Doctors list many colleagues reporting for active service as Amarillo faces a nurse shortage. Carrie Brinkman notes 7000 American nurses volunteered since Pearl Harbor while W. O. Murphy ships out and others are commissioned but not yet called.
Graduation of Amarillo nursing classes will not ease the shortage since most diplomas this summer go to graduates already pledged to serve Uncle Sam. Northwest Texas and St. Anthony's hospitals ran a refresher for inactive nurses, while VA staff adds six more to the armed forces, three to the Army and three to the Navy.
Corporal Albert D. Fulkerson a 25 year old drill instructor at Sheppard Field awoke to a fire in the Texan Hotel and found a lone year old baby on the fifth floor. He wrapped the child in a water soaked blanket and carried it to safety despite burns to his hands. He lost $100 in personal effects in the room.
