President Roosevelt signed the 1934 tax bill adding about 417 million to annual revenue. The act raises taxes on higher incomes gifts estates and corporations while tightening evasion rules. It introduces new inheritance taxes and adjusts normal and surtax rates with a top bracket of 59 percent on large excesses.
Two masked abductors broke into an Arcadia estate during a pool party and kidnapped William F. Gettle 47 a Beverley Hills broker. They bound Gettle and his friend James P. Wolff with neckties and adhesive tape and fled, dropping Gettle over the wall. Wolff was left tied and warned not to call the police. Police expect ransom demands but have no amount yet. The escape left tire tracks and trampled weeds at the alley exit.
C O Crittenden of 1310 Johnson Street is at Northwest Texas Hospital with deep knife wounds above the abdomen. H H Gilbert and Jack Davis are jailed for investigation after a 2 am incident at the El Blanco Cottage Camp 2408 West Sixth Avenue. Crittenden's condition is not serious. Gilbert was arrested at the Cottage Camp and Davis at 303 North Polk Street. Arrests by Clark Cain, chief of detectives, and Officer M V Turner.
Shirley Brewer a 43 year old pharmacist died after six days on a 15 story high narrow ledge at an unfinished Miami hotel. Missing last Friday his wife reported him. A birds eye view climber found him unconscious last night. He apparently fell from the roof onto the ledge his leg stuck in a masonry hole.
Thunderstorms lashed Amarillo and the Panhandle with 0.25 to 0.75 inch rainfall, downpours in eastern areas, and up to 2 inches at Cheyenne Oklahoma. Damaging bridge approaches near Perryton and Wolf Creek flooded roads. crops benefited as moisture spread from Stratford to Boise City and along the Denver line.
Clifford Kell of Tulsa former Sul Ross State Teachers College football star was arrested in a West Fifth Avenue hotel by Amarillo police and county officers. He is charged by grand jury indictment with hijacking Tulsa land agent Earl Gordon and securing 2150 dollars in cash and a 2500 dollar diamond ring. extradition papers signed by Oklahoma and Texas governors were used to return him to Tulsa for hearing. Kell had been released on bond after a prior arrest two days earlier and faces a second arrest in two months.
The Palo Duro Park concession building cornerstone will be laid at 2:30 p m Saturday. D F Colp chairman of the State Park Board will lay the stone. Mayor Ross D Rogers will be master of ceremonies. Park architect Guy Carlander invites the public with no admission charge. State and national park board members will attend Saturday Sunday and Monday for a tour of the 15000 acre project.
Austrian authorities found a high explosive bomb at Salzburg airport station just before Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss arrived from Vienna for a patriotic front meeting. He appeared unperturbed by the discovery as he proceeded with the event.
A lightning sparked fire destroyed a large oil warehouse and two storage tanks at Texhoma. Two tanks exploded scattering burning gasoline. no injuries were reported. In San Antonio Jack Henderson died of wounds and Lee Whitten was arrested after a shooting at a beer saloon.
A motion for a new trial was filed in district clerk Ben Smiths office today by Joe V. Moore's lawyers after his murder without malice conviction yesterday by a district court jury. Judge Henry S Bishop did not rule today due to another trial and its expected ruling is anticipated. The defense plans to appeal to the state criminal appeals court while asserting multiple trial errors.
