Texas Rangers and Gray Son County officers battled a massive crowd in Sherman as they attempted to try George Hughes a 41 year old Black man accused of criminal assault. Tear gas bombs were used and courthouse corridors lawns and streets were overrun as firemen climbed ladders to reach prisoners inside the building. The mob grew after Hughes was surrounded by officials under orders from Governor Dan Moody. He was arraigned the day before and accepted any sentence. Wealth of threats and renewed violence followed as officers rushed him to safety in the district clerk’s vault. Security was tightened and tear gas and reinforcements were demanded from North Texas sheriffs.
