Railroads face ice use and fuel savings in wartime era
A compilation by the Association of American Railroads reports 16 million tons of ice used annually by U.S. railways, with 13 million for refrigerator cars and 3 million for dining and other services. Fuel use per ton mile declines show a 29 percent freight and 16 percent passenger savings since 1921. Water needs total about 600 billion gallons yearly, and treated water boosts locomotive efficiency and boiler life.
