Author Turns Down Pulitzer Prize Award
New York May 7 William Saroyan declined the Pulitzer prize for The Time of Your Life, calling it a good and perhaps great theatrical work. He follows Sinclair Lewis who refused a Pulitzer in 1926 for Arrowsmith. The play won the 1939 New York Drama Critics Circle award and had a 185 performance run, with another New York production planned for fall. Selection of Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath as the winning novel sparked anticipated criticism.

Future Education, Religion, and America's Youth
Dr. Ray C. Snodgrass of Wichita told the Lions Club that education must include religious training as future American independence hinges on youth. He cited 34 million youths aged four to 18, 17 million of whom receive no religious education, and claimed 97 percent of criminals come from this group. He warned that schooling alone cannot secure the future and urged religion as the only solution.
