London May 5 censorship was imposed on press messages to and from India. After Mahatma Gandhi was arrested near Surat the Cable Company told United Press a Delhi message on Indian Nationalist movement was not delivered due to censor instructions.
Tightly shattered and barred. Only Muslims and some factory workers hesitated to join the Bomby hartal started under heavy patrols of soldiers. Troops and armored cars patrolled. See Gandhi Page 2.
Washington May 5 United Press Rep Lognardia Republican argues Congress would worsen prison crowding by approving parts of the administration law enforcement program aimed at easing court congestion. Glider pilot Jack Barstow rests easier after a crash near Point Loma while attempting a world record with a motorless craft.
Grace Panick, stenographer for Gulf Refining, was shot through both arms when Sheriff Bill Thompson says Wm Short fired at a car fleeing a house. Panick, from Lubbock, had stopped to powder her nose before visiting friends across Tyler Street, mistaking the burglar pursuit for her own.
In Dallas the trial of former Judge John W. Brady for the Lehlia Highsmith murder at Austin proceeds after a morning conference. Brady’s prior Austin trial ended with a hung jury amid an insanity defense tied to chronic alcoholism.
Richard W. Clarke known as Deadwood Dick a pony express rider and Indian fighter died at St. Josephs hospital in Deadwood I D at 83 He was a legendary figure of the Black Hills gold rush era and counted Wild Bill Hickok Buffalo Bill Calamity Jane and others among his acquaintances.
In Columbus on May 5 extraordinary precautions were ordered at the state penitentiary amid rumors of an outside gang plot to break in. Pass controls were tightened, soldiers and guards required countersign passes, six men were detained near the walls and released after proving unemployment. Inside, unrest persisted with 1,200 inmates segregated last week and 660 in a wire stockade amid ongoing prisoner disagreements.
Joseph Henry White, 14, drowned in Buffalo Bayou Houston Texas on May 4 while berry picking with his mother Mrs Henry White nearby. He strayed from shore, cried for help, and swam too far out for her to reach him. John Kenyon left for Macon, Ga yesterday.
Violent deaths occurred in Texas over the weekend in air and ground incidents, shootings, drownings and an explosion. Ten persons died including Smoky Adams and Ozona pilot Jack Thorp in a Fort Stockton plane crash blamed on motor trouble. Two small children Don Williams and Doris Fay Lowery were killed crossing to a storm cellar in Grayson County. E. M. Pittman died in Kingsville when struck by a car driven by W. J. Compton, who faced negligent homicide charges. Leroy Gravett’s body was recovered from Lake Worth after his car rolled into the water.
Citizens of North Amarillo circulate petitions asking the city commission to withhold expenditure of all street improvement funds on subways until the North Fillmore project is completed. They cite a $100,000 bond issue two years ago with about $43,000 remaining and $81,000 of a recent tax warrant unused, urging that funds be redirected to the North Fillmore subway.
Austin dispatch reports Governor Moody will commute the death sentence of Percy Howard for the murder of El Paso chauffeur N. V. Nixon in 1920 to life imprisonment. Howard faced execution on May 9. the decision marks a reversal in the ex treme penalty case and is noted alongside a Boxwell Bros. ambulance listing.
Amarillo officials reject a chain gang. two prisoners cannot aid weed control. City Forester Temple Robinson will have workers treat the Municipal Auditorium lawn this afternoon to eradicate dandelions. City Manager W. N. Durham stresses prompt action to remove the pestiferous weed.
George Brock of Pampa is sought after his seventeen year old son Loney Brock died after brain tumor surgery at St. Anthony's hospital. Brock reportedly left letters from Pampa. attempts to reach him in Graham and Pampa failed. The body awaits burial while authorities search for the missing father. if not found, Loney will be buried in a pauper’s grave.
Washington May 5 Senate and House leaders adopt an optimistic six week plan to adjourn Congress by June 14. Key steps include swift passage of the tariff bill within two weeks and ratification of the London naval treaty in a week. The Parker Supreme Court nomination faces a Senate vote amid a tight contest over liberal lumber and tariff provisions.
Nashua NH residents woke to martial law as 260 national guardsmen patrolled to deter looters after a 5 million fire. Firefighters fought seven hours through embers and wind, destroying about 200 homes five factories and damaging the Infant Jesus church and convent.
