Amarillo observes Straw Hat Day with air conditioned top pieces in vogue. Merchants report broad stock of hats including color bands, polka dots, and bright prints. Imports from Ecuador and other regions shape prices up to 25 dollars with 10 gallon wide brims popular again.
The House Armed Services Committee unanimously approved a two year extension of the draft law. Inductions would require congressional approval to proceed and would run 21 months unless Congress changes the law. The draft act expires June 24 and no inductions have occurred for over a year as voluntary enlistments meet military needs. Carl Vinson sponsored the measure to keep 18 year olds registered and 19 through 25 in the system.
The Weather Bureau reports partly cloudy skies with warm and windy conditions in Amarillo this afternoon. Cloudy Friday morning, clearing in the afternoon with cooler temperatures. Forecast high today 88 degrees, low 55, high tomorrow 72. 24 hour high was 89 with a low recorded. West Texas remains partly cloudy with little temperature change. New Mexico: partly cloudy today tonight and Friday with light showers possible in the north. Cooler in the northwest portion.
Texas Flying Farmers begin their annual convention at Tradewind Airport with a radio safety school at Herring Hotel tonight. Members will scan a social schedule and aerial tours across the Panhandle, expecting 100 registrants by tonight. Tex Anderson, Medina president, leads a 400-member group arriving for a directors meeting, with a banquet tomorrow at Amarillo Hotel hosted by Phillips Petroleum and The Globe News.
Senator McCarthy said a witness can testify that persons tied to Amerasia Magazine helped collect and ship papers to Russia in 1945. He named Frank Bielaski, once a wartime OSS agent, as the witness under Senate questioning amid probes of State Department Communist influence.
In Leon County Texas near Leona seven African American schoolchildren were killed when a converted school bus collided with a trailer truck carrying sheet steel. Ten children aged 10 to 16 had just boarded for a three mile ride to Midway School. Three others remained hospitalized in Huntsville in serious condition. Names included Ottie Brown 13 and Comnie Gene Brown 11, Melvin Brown 15, James Lee Johnson 14, and a Grant Clay child unnamed. The truck driver was unharmed.
Leonard Johnson a 24 year old porter died at 3 30 this morning at Northwest Texas Hospital from injuries after falling from the 12th floor into the elevator shaft at the Herring Hotel. He suffered a broken right leg and right arm head and facial injuries. Funeral arrangements are pending at Austin Funeral Chapel.
May 4 a blonde young bandit robbed the City National Bank of Mineral Wells at about 12 30 this afternoon. Police Officer Scott Tobey said the thief escaped with a few hundred dollars.
Phillipburg modern age report notes L. C. Bush aged 50 and his wife Mary Ann aged 49 recorded on the census rolls today as cave dwellers living in a storage cave in Phillipsburg New Jersey May 4.
The 100 day Chrysler walkout by 89,000 CIO United Auto Workers ends with a three year contract. Pension of 100 monthly dollars at 65 with 25 years, medical and insurance boosts, and dues checkoff are included. Production to resume across 25 plants within 10 days, with anticipated 750,000 vehicles this month. Weathered leaders and executives trade harsh words as settlement closes.
Preliminary census figures show Amarillo’s people per housing unit at about 3.3, down from 3.45 in 1940 as housing units rose from 14,981 to roughly 22,000. Walter Shaller notes a “spreading of the people” with 8,000 new units since 1940, while total population figures for 1950 are not yet released.
