Death claims civic leader in Amarillo
Amarillo loses a leading civic figure as Clay H. Thornton 53 dies at Veteras Hospital after a heart attack at his laundry office. He was Panhandle Laundry & Dry Cleaning Co. secretary treasurer and general manager active in youth work and local organizations. Born December 5 1896 he served in World War I and later worked at Waples Platter and Panhandle Laundry. He is survived by his wife Lefa. Thornton held roles with Polk Street Methodist Church Kiwanis Club Amarillo Chamber of Commerce and civic boards. He rose to leadership after the death of George Lindsey in 1931. His passing removes a longtime Amarillo community leader.
