By Their Mannerisms You Shall Know Them
Hollywood columnist Dan Thomas notes how actors’ unspoken gestures define their screen presence. He cites Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo as examples and lists recurring habits: Joan Marie Dressler tilts her chin, Marilyn Monroe style arms, Wallace Beery rubs his nose, Lewis Stone purses lips and raises brows, John Gilbert rocks on his toes, Norma Shearer grips her hip, Joan Crawford lifts chin, William Haines touches lips with a handkerchief, Robert Montgomery fingers together, Ramon Navarro flings his arms when excited. He argues these unconscious acts persist beyond direction and escape notice by directors.
