Gas tax meet under way in Panhandle to oppose proposed levy
This afternoon at 3 oclock a meeting of landowners producers and others opposed to the proposed natural gas tax is under way at the Chamber of Commerce. A Panhandle delegation will be sent to Austin to back the sub substitute measure as the House prepares to vote next Tuesday. The bill would impose three eighths of a cent on every thousand feet of gas produced in Texas and has Senate and House support. Panhandle operators warn many gas producers now earn as little as one cent per thousand feet and fear disaster from the tax. A substitute would set a two percent of value tax on gas, matching the oil levy, to be urged by Panhandle producers.

Detour Traffic Near Magnolia No. 4 Latham Well
PAMPA March 20 Traffic detoured as workers rerouted routes to control Magnolia Oil Company's No. 4 Latham well three miles west of Pampa. The well blew in yesterday producing an estimated 15,000 barrels daily, at 2922 feet depth with 70 feet excess, oil gravity noted. Trains passing the site last night extinguished fires from the oil and gas spray while drillers planned to leave tools in the well for several days.
