Paul F. The Texas Senate engrossed a constitutional amendment to abolish ad valorem taxes and another to exempt homesteads up to 5000 in value. Both measures passed without record votes and face 21 votes on final passage. The current ad valorem revenue is about 25 million each year.
Two AP reports from Austin note bills introduced March 23 to correct defects in prior legislation deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court last week. Each measure would provide rural school supervisors in place of teachers institutes. one by Hines for Cass County and the other by Adams for Jasper County.
Two bandits were killed by gunfire at Edna Kansas after robbing the First National Bank of an undetermined amount. The incident occurred shortly after noon as the culprits tried to escape.

Washington reports that lawmakers may replace stabilization operations in wheat with an export debenture and an equalization fee. Sam H. Thompson backs the equalization fee while predicting acreage cuts only if prices fall, and the farm bureau supports the fee to curb large surpluses without large public spending.
A United Press survey shows at least 49 motorists killed and more than 120 injured in weekend traffic nationwide as spring weather drew many drivers onto highways. Chicago led with nine deaths, New York had seven, and other cities report multiple fatalities and injuries across Kansas City Northern Ohio Indiana Des Moines Detroit Buffalo Harrisburg and Texas.

A London Hospital research serum rapidly destroys cancer tissue grown in glass while sparing living tissues. Described by Dr Thomas Lunsden in The American Journal of Cancer, the serum originates from animals inoculated with cancer and is tested on cancer cells.
A jury to try Leo Brothers for the murder of Tribune police reporter Alfred Jake Lingle was completed and sworn in. Opening arguments were scheduled for tomorrow in the criminal court building in Chicago.
Fort Worth police were ordered to shoot to kill after a weekend of youth gangs committing five robberies totaling nearly $400. A gang hijacked a car, drove to Dallas, and forced a driver to follow. In Fort Worth, three bridge party guests were robbed at gunpoint as two other hijackings occurred.
R. Walker Hall chief justice of the Court of Civil Appeals for the Seventh district owns about a half mile of paved highway on an 80 foot right of way across his Wilbarger County farm. The special court held county commissioners cannot condemn land for state highway purposes, a ruling with major statewide implications if upheld.

President Hoover arrived in Porto Rican waters for the first stop of his West Indies trip landing at Ponce where flags flew in his honor. Amarillo prepares for Arbor Day events with 10 000 trees to be planted at City Section Park in a 4 PM ceremony. Invitations are still arriving at City Hall as officials from Panhandle and Tri-State areas plan to attend. The program will include trees planted in honor of the President, Interior Secretary, and governors of Texas Oklahoma and New Mexico. Thomas Boles of Carlsbad Caverns National Monument is among attendees. Exercises follow at the park’s athletic field pergola near Twenty First Avenue.
