Austin lawmakers move toward floor debate on congressional redistricting. The Metcalfe bill would add two West Texas seats, Greer bill adds one East and one West, splitting three new posts among South and oil and livestock regions. Reagan county shifted to San Angelo district with expanded reach toward Comal County.
Panhandle March 17 R T Nix Skellytown case employee charged with murder after the shooting of Noah Cornett is free on $1000 bond awaiting grand jury action set for July 27. The preliminary hearing before Justice J L Graham suggested self defense. Cornett was under sentence for assault with intent to kill from a December shooting in which Nix was wounded by Cornett Griggs ambulance.
Mahatma Gandhi faced jeers and catcalls from a labor audience in Bombay as Communists taunted him over his truce with Lord Irwin and the civil disobedience campaign. Nationalists and Communists clashed briefly on the platform as a Red flag was replaced by the Nationalist emblem. Gandhi urged unity and cited the upcoming National Congress convention at Karachi demanding independence or dominion status with no British concessions.
Representative Long of Wichita Falls blasted Governor Ross Sterling and Pat Neff on the Texas House floor for alleged oil bias and petty politics. He accused Neff of turning the gas waste issue into a political issue while Sterling was criticized for listening to Humble Oil officials rather than to the people.
About 100 men armed with shotguns and revolvers ambushed six Phillips Pipe Line guards escorting laborers to tanks in Hog Haven road. Four guards wounded in a 12 minute gunbattle as attackers circled in cars and open fired. Special deputy Jack Johnson described intense exchange. attackers fled after a tracking car appeared.
The sealing steamer Viking exploded and sank off Horse Island during a Sunday night voyage. Captain Abraham Kean Jr and 117 crew reached the island after a day of ice floe drift, with at least 25 dead and several injured. Dorys and missing film crew companions were reported among those aboard.
The Fisk Jubilee Singers from Fisk University Nashville Tennessee will perform at Municipal Auditorium as part of the Amarillo College of Music Spring Music Festival. The program features plantation music spirituals and songs of the old southland.
James Willis Helm aged 78, a retired farmer and Panhandle pioneer, died at 2 a m Tuesday at his daughter Mrs C B Slay s Groom home. He survived by his wife four children three sisters and several grandchildren funeral arrangements to be announced by Blackburn Funeral Home after relatives arrival.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers will perform at Municipal Auditorium Thursday night with a request program arranged by Emil F. Myers of the Amarillo College of Music. Patrons can mail song requests to Myers care of the college not later than Thursday morning.
Austin attorney general James V. Allred pledged to investigate alleged Texas utility monopolies, responding to Fort Worth Rep Duvall. He noted delays from legislative duties but stressed readiness to pursue under anti trust laws if facts and law warrant. Duvall cited Lone Star Gas Corp dominance claims.
President Hoover ships aboard the refurbished Arizona from Washington for a 10 day trip to Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Secretaries Hurley and Wilbur travel with him while Mrs. Hoover stays with Herbert Hoover Jr. in Asheville.
John W. Brady, a former Austin lawyer serving a three year term in the Texas penitentiary, will head the prison school at Harlem Farm near Sugarland next week. He is imprisoned in Huntsville after being sentenced last year for the October 1929 killing of Lehlia Highsmith, Capitol stenographer.
The first class of the Pierce Street Baptist Sunday School training course was crowded last night. Miss Mary Alice Riley of the Baptist Sunday School Board Nashville Tenn will conduct the classes which continue through Friday.
Tack continues sale of five varieties of roses at 1 per bunch, with just a few hundred left. Cr N Redburn oversees the sale to promote Amarillo as the City of Roses, a program now popular across the Panhandle with blooms sold in Dalbart Quanah Lamesa Memphis and Midland.
W D Thurman Jr five year old son of Mr and Mrs Thurman of 315 West Sixth Avenue was struck by a car driven by A J Armstrong at Harrison Street. He was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital with brain concussion and head lacerations. Condition described as critical but improving. No charges filed. Mrs H D Baker who runs a nearby drug store did not see the collision. A bystander carried the child to the drug store and an ambulance was summoned.
In New York German radio envoy Hellmut H. Hellmut tours NBC facilities seeking to set up short wave broadcasts for German listeners, with potential simultaneous NBC airings in the United States. Amos and Andy return to Chicago after a week in New York for new Harlem material.
Dr. Benjamin M. Primer director of the Amarillo Potter County Health Unit says flu activity is mild with only one current case treated. He notes several colds and that pneumonia deaths in January February and March exceed other months, but no alarm is warranted.
The trial of Will Moore, a negro hotel porter, begins in criminal district court Wednesday at 9 o clock for the murder of Mont Pete Moore, a New Mexico ranch hand, in the Terminal Hotel lobby. Judge Henry Bishop orders a special jury pool of 160. about 126 summoned, 15 unavailable, and about 18 in the weekly panel.

London March 17 Labor government blames lax party discipline for a Commons defeat on a minor Electoral Reform bill clause. Absent sixteen Labor MPs would have changed the vote. Sir John Simon led Liberals against the government, while Lloyd George faced a breach with his party.
