Bitter fight expected on oil agency bill
In Austin on March 6 the state affairs committee forwarded a bill to strip the Railroad Commission of oil and gas regulatory powers and transfer them to a three man agency to be appointed by the governor. The committee voted 11 to 8 to report favorably after hours of hearings with both sides arguing for and against the appointive commission. Supporters said it would abolish politics in conservation and improve regulation. opponents warned it would weaken democracy and invite a dictatorial body not answerable to the people.
