Panhandle cattlemen at a recent meeting formed the Panhandle Livestock Association to sponsor a regional stocker and feeder cattle show and sale. Jim Weymouth was reelected president with Lee Bivins and Bill Eakens as officers. The first fall event is planned for late September or early October.
The War Department announced plan to discharge 100000 non volunteer soldiers by the end of June. Notices were sent to domestic and overseas commanders to activate demobilization procedures. The schedule had called for all eligible U S men to be discharged by March 15.
The Texas Senate approved 23 to 2 a plan creating a state university for Negroes in Houston and emergency courses at Austin and Prairie View. The bill, funded at over three million dollars, includes prior House amendments and immediate enactment as emergency legislation.
Sam Houston High School of Houston is Amarillo Golden Sandies first round foe in the Texas State High School Basketball Tournament in Austin. Class AA action includes Crozier Tech vs El Paso and Bryan vs Greenville with Sam Houston facing Amarillo Friday 7 15 p m. Class A and B games start Thursday with Bowie Beeville Plano McCamey Alvin Levelland Lockhart East Mountain and Avinger Burkett Marfa Sugarland Gruver Pettus also on the schedule.

The Texas House defeated Rep. Jim Wright's motion to recommit a parimutuel betting bill to a livestock committee by 72 to 64. Opponents, including church leaders, vow a statewide drive against the measure while sponsors defended notice and public hearings.

Johnson of 807 North Cleveland won the News Tip first prize of five dollars for a Sunday morning story with a deer picture and title about a lawn choosing city life but returning to its natural habitat. Blanche Dickson received second prize of three dollars for a tooth fairy tale. Gay Harris won third prize of two dollars for a honey bee hive find in a remodeled house.
A Sandstorm survey at Amarillo High School shows 32 percent of boys and 7 percent of girls drank liquor. About 1,440 students answered, with 58 percent of drinkers seeking to show off.
