Texas House Passes Open Shop Bill Amid Labor Debate

The Texas House approved a right to work style bill outlawing the closed shop by 96 to 37 and sent a Minnesota patterned labor conciliation measure back to the labor committee. Rep. Marshall O. Bell of San Antonio leads the open shop bill, with Rep. George O. Nokes Jr. backing the conciliation measure. The package heads to the Senate for action as amendments to exclude Railroad Brotherhood were rejected.

D W Mays 67 dies after brief illness in Amarillo

D W Mays 67 died at Amarillo hospital at 1 25 AM following a two day illness. He came to Amarillo 38 years ago from Tennessee and ran the Auto Store at Sixth and Van Buren from 1918 to 1926. He later managed real estate and engaged in Masonic work. He was a Master Mason and Royal Arch Mason, a Knight Templar and Shriner, and a member of First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, daughter, granddaughter, two brothers, six sisters, a niece and three nephews. Funeral service will be tomorrow at 4 PM at Blackburn Shaw Memorial Chapel with Masonic graveside rites at Llano Cemetery.

Burglars Steal Tickets From Casey's Dance Hall

Thieves took twelve tickets to the Policemen's Ball, a watch, one carton of cigarettes, and about four dollars in pennies from Casey's Dance Hall and Bar at 511 North Fillmore. Owner R. S. Case reported the break in. police believe a side door left unlocked allowed entry.

Underground Jewish militants escalate attacks in Palestine

There Judge Mattson Brings Humorous Reprimand

In Portland on March 4 Matt Mattson faced a jail sentence for drunkenness after pleading guilty. Municipal Judge John B. Seabrook questioned him about dairy work and where cows are milked. Mattson replied with a joke and earned a fine.
