New York reports Jack Dempsey gravely ill at Polyclinic Hospital after an appendectomy last night led to peritonitis in the pelvic region. Doctors said he faced better than fifty percent odds of recovery as the nation watches for further bulletins.
T J Pendergast the Kansas City political boss collapsed with a heart attack in Leavenworth Kansas and was taken to the federal prison hospital in serious condition. This is his second attack since beginning a 15 month term for income tax evasion last month. He had been assigned to the prison yard cleaning crew but could not push the heavy broom due to illness.
Captain Jim Line of the Panhandle state police warns adults to avoid dangerous behavior during the Independence Day holiday while protecting children. He cites past holiday injuries and fatalities, urging vigilance as drownings, fires, and crashes spiked over the long weekend.

Mrs Ruth Marie Rubens freed from a Russian prison reports in a letter to her nine year old daughter that her husband Adolph A Rubens "won't be with us any more." Rubens was arrested in Moscow in December 1937 for espionage and jailed wife seized days later. She visited him twice in prison with the last visit over a year ago.

Fort Worth market records a dramatic 18 pound cantaloupe weighing in at 4 2. Farmer C Aldres of Hillsboro area grew the melon by pruning other melons and watering with five gallons daily. He sold 18 additional cantaloupes averaging about 10 pounds each.
Hayward Wisconsin June 30 FBI reported checking the possibility that Ray Olson slayer of two deputies was the kidnap slayer of Charles Mattson of Tacoma Washington. FBI agents viewed Olson's body and took fingerprints bertillon measurements and other identifications. The ten year old Mattson boy was kidnapped December 27 1934.
The House approved the $1 755 000 000 relief bill after brief debate and moved to the monetary measure. Senate leaders warned of a potential filibuster as President Roosevelt blasted would be blockades. Warren Austin defended legitimate debate while hoping relief could pass before monetary authority is stalled.
Reports indicate Dempsey remains hospitalized with visitors arriving from California. Red Burman, a heavyweight and Dempsey’s protege, attempted to enter, but hospital attendants denied access. Neighbors Eddie Kuzma, 12, George 4, and Buddy Short 9 waited outside in drizzle for news, while Burman promised the champion would be okay.
