In Austin observers weigh whether Governor W Lee O'Daniel will run for a second term. Factors include his program's fate in the legislature and his own statements about ongoing battles, with a possible January 1941 exit if he does not seek re election.
Children flocked to Amarillo's Southwest Sportsmen's Show with nickel admission drawing dozens of youngsters. Two films and a 2:30 exhibit featuring four sports champions drew a record crowd. tanks and aquarium fish were repaired and on display. Game animals and birds were calming as crowds grew.
TIENTSIN June 28 U P Clarence E Gauss the United States consul general at Shanghai today rejected a Japanese note warning foreign ships to leave the blockaded ports of Foochow and Wenchow by noon tomorrow and stating Japan would not guarantee safety after that hour. He cited treaty rights to enter leave or reside at ports and said Japan would be responsible for Americans and property. Admirals Yarnell likely to issue a similar note defending the right of U S warships to sail in Chinese waters to protect lives and interests. Americans believed they would not evacuate Foochow or other blockaded ports, and that U S ships were at Foochow. In London Chamberlain said negotiations would start in Tokyo to settle conditions relating to Tientsin, and that British hopes Japanese soldiers’ treatment of British subjects would cease.
A lifeguard fainted after witnessing a pool injury at Gem Lake Swimming Pool where Jack Keith suffered a severe leg fracture during a springboard dive. Keith was rushed to Northwest Texas hospital in good condition. In golf, Byron Clancy upset Bill Gallacher 2 up in the Tri-State Senior Golf Tournament, with Skaggs of Clovis, N. M. advancing as medalist. other results listed from Amarillo-area players.
A Columbia homeowner reported a 1000 pound iron stairway stolen after workers meant to remove stairs at a different address. Police later found the crew had gone to the wrong house, clearing the mystery of the missing feature.
