Wiley Post and Harold Gatty left Harbor Grace at 4 57 P M to pursue a round the world flight aiming to beat the Graf Zeppelin record. M Ruth Nichols remains hospitalized after a crash in New Brunswick as other crews prepare for ocean crossing attempts including Denmark Budapest and Japan.
At the family home Ray Loden 30 shot his step-daughter Josephine 14 with a revolver after striking her with a rifle butt. He then killed himself with a gunshot to the head. Josephine was rushed to Northwest Texas Hospital in a grave condition with a head wound and a bullet at the base of the brain. Neighbors say Loden had been despondent over unemployment and may have attacked during a struggle in the kitchen and living room before collapsing. Police described the scene as a domestic assault ending in self-inflicted death.
Pair tonight and Wednesday with partly cloudy skies in Amarillo. West Texas and New Mexico expect generally fair conditions with little temperature change. Temperatures ranged from a high of 85 to a low of 65 at 1 o'clock.

Yesterday contracts totaling 2 030 226 were awarded for road and bridge improvements covering 193 miles. The panel also reinstated Highway 66 from Clarksville to the Red River and began negotiations for a free Red River bridge.
Relatives are questioned and a “mystery man” hunted after two 14 and 10 year old sisters die from poisoned chicken sandwiches at a family reunion near Lebanon. Authorities seek how poison entered 12 of 18 sandwiches and probe possible involvement of the Simmons family.
An explosion of two gas drums in room 108 Fisk Building at 6 yesterday evening caused about 3000 in property loss and ruined five offices. The units were borrowed from a local gas firm and tested when the blast occurred. Offices ruined include Clark Realty Company Sam H Bennett Jenkins Mantel Brick and Tile Company and the Electrolux Company. Insurance covers the building but fixtures were a total loss.
Ruth Nichols sustained back injuries from a crash at St John New Brunswick but doctors reported no internal injuries and no dislocation of cracked vertebrae. She expects hospital bandaging then return home in three to four days.
Cleo Bolin and C H White of LeFors face federal counts for beating a man named Robinson at a LeFors recreation club after an exchange. Robinson testified before a U S grand jury investigating recent conspiracy indictments. Bonds to be set by Judge James C Wilson in Potter County jail.
Investigators say no new angles in the Sunday shooting of Jack Dennis. E. C. Baker is held and silent in Potter County jail as officers search for the driver of the car that fled the scene at the Texan Filling Station at Sixth and Hayden. Relatives of Dennis’s victim have been located in Joplin, Missouri. Authorities still suspect a dispute over liquor charges tied the partners Dennis and Baker.
Fred Chambers, previously fined $25 for drunken driving, stands trial in Potter County Criminal District Court for failure to stop and render aid after a fatal hit and run. The indictment also lists negligent homicide as a related charge after G. W. Callaghan died from injuries at the hospital following the Fourth Avenue and Jefferson Streets collision. Jury selection occurred early today with testimony beginning promptly.
Two more arrests were made this morning in the Federal Court in indictments returned Friday charging 48 with conspiracy to violate the national liquor laws. Lee Banks of Pampa and O T Smith of Pampa posted bonds of 2500 each. The men are said to have been former Gray County officers.

Fire gutted waterfront property along 500 yards of St John Harbor destroying 11 docks and sheds. Norman Herring, last seen near a vault in a burning United Fruit Co building, is listed missing. Damage tops 10 million dollars as crews search for victims.
Amarillo police ask for help locating Roberta Heath missing from Abilene since May 24. A $25 reward is offered for information leading to her return. She is 5'5" 120 pounds with light brown hair gray eyes and a damaged left thumb. She is described as timid and bashful.
Tax collectors from counties across the state arrive in Amarillo for the three day annual convention of the Tax Collectors Association beginning tomorrow. About 200 delegates are expected with hosts J W Collins Potter County tax collector and the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Ernest O Thompson will open proceedings and C J Lockhart will respond. Rube M Hanks former president will speak on the organization. Officers include Roy Law president R D Richey vice president J Lockhart second vice president and Paul Williams secretary treasurer.
