New Lindbergh Ship Faster Yet Narrower Range
The Lockheed Sirius monoplane used by Charles and Anne Lindbergh for a Pacific flight delivers greater power and speed than the Spirit of St. Louis but with a smaller cruising radius. Sirius, first of its type, speeds 170-180 mph. Spirit’s top speed is 120 mph with full load. Sirius carries 440 gallons of fuel for about 330 mile radius, versus Spirit’s 451 gallons for about 4,400 mile range fueled for ocean crossing. Structural design favors monocoque, low wing cantilever. Sirius features a 42 ft 10 in wing span and distinctive black fuselage with gold stripe and orange-red wings.
