At noon today thirty five blocks of Wharton streets were under water and the Colorado River was climbing at three inches an hour. Water stood curb deep in the affected area as the flood expanded.
Rivers in Texas rose to flood levels along a 60 mile stretch, isolating Columbus and Alleyton while threatening another city. Colorado River gauged over 37 feet with areas 15 miles wide, prompting evacuations as 2.5 million dollars in losses were reported and highway bridges washed out.
A French freighter Louisiane at Port Houston caught fire in its hold early today. Firefighters feared ignition of cotton and lubricants as steam and water fought the blaze. The hold was sealed after smoke was seen by a dock watchman, with Wilkens and Rich Agency officials coordinating efforts. The fire boat stood by.

In Lansing Kansas the riot at the state prison coal mine ended after 21 hours as Warden Lacey Simpson led officers to subdue 300 convicts. Guards evacuated the mine level while smoke, gas masks, and flares protected staff.
Carl S. Makeig was named commander of the Amarillo Sons of the Confederacy last night and has organized the group locally. Enrollment of 1,000 is expected before the Confeder ate Reunion opens in September in Amarillo.
In Rayndeville on June 19 the season opens with Texas' first bale of 1935 cotton weighing 464 pounds. Grown by Regoria Valdex at the Gus Nyquist farm near Sebastian and ginned by Joe Reynolds Gin Company the bale was shipped to Houston by truck.
The Hauptmann appeal in Trenton will be a restrained proceeding with 75 attendees. Fourteen justices will hear oral arguments on the murder conviction with three hours for the defense and an hour and a half for the state. The case follows a February verdict of first degree murder and prior defense disputes over funds and counsel.

The Colorado River rose rapidly threatening Austin and Wharton County with levee breaks and flood damage. The river flooded Columbus and Cuero as 20 lives were lost statewide and crops and property suffered millions in losses.
Federal Judge R L Williams orders the first execution under the Lindbergh kidnaping law for Arthur Gooch a Texas Oklahoma outlaw. Gooch is scheduled to die September 13 for kidnapping Paris officers last November after a Durant jury recommended the death penalty.
British officials, armed with the leverage of the new Anglo German naval agreement, prepare to host delegations from France Italy and Russia to discuss a proposed multilateral naval limitation treaty. Capt Anthony Folen will meet with Pierre Laval in Paris on Friday to finalize details and Paris reaction remains cautious.

William F. Zirner of Merchantville sues Western Union Telegraph Co in New Jersey Supreme Court for $3.6 million alleging violation of gambling laws by sending chain telegrams. The common informer claim targets the 1877 gambling statute providing a 50 percent penalty to the informer and the remainder to the county.
