Fred F. Florence declares Texas banks in best condition in state history and a return to leadership. In Lansing Kas June 18 violence erupted at a prison coal mine when 380 striking miners seized the gun cage guarded by five officials on the 720 foot level. The cage crew said they could hold out as 11 guards were taken hostage. Officials doubted firearms were used while negotiations continued. one superintendent, Robert Murray, went underground to talk with the miners and later disappeared. Work persisted on the surface as authorities awaited a resolution.
The Roosevelt social security program nears final Senate approval with major provisions intact. The bill includes $15 monthly federal grants for needy individuals over 65 or blind, payroll taxes for unemployment insurance, and a structure to fund old age pensions of 10 to 85 dollars monthly.
London June 18 Neville Chamberlain stated in the House of Commons that the Lausanne agreement cancelling German war reparations cannot be ratified until war debts to the United States are settled. Liberal MP William Mahane pressed for waiver of this condition for France Italy and Belgium, but Chamberlain refused noting ratification must be linked to the war debt issue. Governor Cochran, amid a three day martial law standstill, denounced a counter arbitration plan by the Omaha and Council Bluffs Street Railway Company as unacceptable and ordered 1,800 National Guardsmen to block trams. The company offered a substitute proposal but Cochran dismissed it and kept streetcars off the streets.
Texas highway officials urged relief through road work to combat unemployment. Chairman Harry Hines and D. K. Martin told Senators Sheppard and Connally they seek to use any Texas share of work relief funds for highways, not to exceed proportional allocation. They stressed they are here to present road development as the best unemployment solution.
The House military committee ordered Chairman McSwain to request from Secretary Dern a report by the army inspector general on Dern’s prior reprmand of Major General Benjamin Foulois. The panel had urged Foulois be removed for violations and misconduct, but Dern cleared him while rebuking him for misleading a sub committee.
Hereford reports Walter Kerbow an 18 year old hitchhiker died in a car crash seven miles west of the city after a blowout sent the vehicle into a ditch. Ruby Kerbow 20 sister and Jim Fields Jr 38 and Mr and Mrs G B Reddoch owners of the auto were injured and treated at a Hereford hospital. Kerbow's body held at a local funeral home. father Frank Kerbow of Oklahoma City notified.
Eskridge the Rev C Edgar Eskridge 40 minister faces murder charges over the shooting of Police Chief Ed J O Reilly. Trial set to open in Orange County district court tomorrow. Eskridge defense seeks change of venue while District Attorney Hollis Kinard vows to contest moving the case.
Texas Rangers, under orders from a legislative investigating committee, take charge of records at the State Department of Agriculture in Austin. Commissioner J. E.
