President Hoover formally pledged full White House support for Dwight W. Morrow the Republican nominee for U S Senator from New Jersey in the coming fall campaign. The administration’s backing signals confidence Morrow will win the Senate seat as he resumes duties in Mexico after London Naval Conference work with a likely departure around June 24.
In Mexico City on June 18 crowds of Americans and Mexicans celebrated Ambassador Dwight Morrow’s landslide win in the New Jersey senatorial primary. Returns were sent by the foreign correspondents’ club and newspapers as late ballots were awaited.
United Press reports Dwight W. Morrow widened his Republican nomination lead for the U S Senate in New Jersey to about 240,744 votes as results from 884 of 3328 precincts were tallied. Fort trailed with 95,074 and Frelinghuysen with 41,233.
The Hawley Smoot tariff bill takes effect with Canada enacting counter duties on twelve US imports. Belgium ponders European talks, Spain weighs breaking the modus vivendi, Cuba’s El Mundo denounces the law, and French paper Le Petit Bleu urges boycotts as press and governments assess retaliation measures.
John A. Pete McKenzie, convicted of the murder of Sam Street, San Antonio chief of detectives, had his appeal dismissed by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. He faced death in the electric chair after an insanity ruling delayed execution. The court specified he could be executed once deemed sane by a sanity jury.
A Texas Pharmaceutical Association convention in Houston considers a resolution to pay $2000 for dead drug store bandits. Proposed by Walter Adams of Forney and endorsed by Harry Hein of San Antonio, the measure was sent to a committee after applause at the meeting.
Amarillo police started a campaign against drivers operating vehicles without tail lights. William Brock and Edward F. Schlee arrived at Jacksonville municipal airport at 12 55 p m E S T from their roundtrip flight to San Diego California. They proceeded to Jacksonville beach to finish the flight but had to skip a beach landing due to high tide and returned to the airport to land.
Reports spread across cities include the discovery of Bill Kean's body in Bryan Texas after a suspected assault, and Lee Cazort with Ernest Dew posting bonds in Little Rock for corrupt practices. An Ascot England lightning strike kills Walter Holbein, a noted bookmaker near royalty. Senators Norris and Blaine call for delaying the London treaty review amid summer senate fatigue. Police identify driver Albert Blackburn of 610 Madison who struck W. F. Murray at Sixth and Taylor. Murray, night engineer at the Capitol hotel, is hospitalized at St. Anthony with injuries not considered serious. Bill Johnson aided the victim to the hospital. Two eye witnesses are named. Murray remains under care for several days.
In Dallas on June 18 opponents of the state road bond proposal gather to plan a statewide campaign. J Barney Davis chairs the meeting and says Davidson and Sterling entry into the governor race politicizes highway issues. Speakers include Jake Newberry and Tom De Berry with an executive committee named from Dallas Bogata Sulphur Springs and Greenville.
Emmett Roberts of Stratford pleaded guilty in district court to forging his father's name on a $10 check. He received a two year suspended sentence with the district attorney recommending suspension.
Panhandle counties push road building with bond votes and elections. Lipscomb County voters approved 100000 for their share of a highway project extending about 11 miles from the Texas Oklahoma line to Hemphill County. In the city, a July 8 special election fills a vacancy on the city commission with candidates including H Ernest Smith and Dr C W Baynham.
Major E A Wood of Dallas, city planner for Amarillo, arrived to confer with officials. He will obtain maps and data for city zoning, per City Manager W N Durham, with progress of zoning plans to be outlined soon.
Local paving contracts totaling more than 77000 dollars were awarded by the Amarillo city commission in its longest session. Projects include Fast Sixth Avenue and East Seventh Avenue street work with Caliche lime stone bases and two course penetration tops. Gober and Thompson won the penetration contracts at 1.00 dollar per square yard, Willmering and Mullen secured concrete bids, marking the first bids on concrete paving in Amarillo.
Rear Admiral Richard E Byrd and his Antarctic expedition crew return after sixteen months. New York plans a noon reception with a marine parade, 13 gun salute, and guard of honor for the explorer. A navy amphibian plane will greet the party before quarantine and city hall ceremonies broadcast nationwide.
Washington reports that Representative Tinkham of Massachusetts was challenged by Bishop Cannon to repeat his libel charge on the House floor. Cannon accused him of misusing money from Jameson to promote the Hoover campaign and to smear his rival in the South. Cannon later blasted Tinkham via telegram for immunity from prosecution while in Congress.
Amarillo officials announce a July 4 program at Tri State Fair Park featuring six motorcycle races from five to twenty six miles and an all day outing at Jack Hall's Ranch. Admission 60 cents adults 25 cents children. Free amusements at 6 pm, fireworks to end, Joe Normans Orchestra for a late dance. Also notes new naval academy members Jacob T Bullen and George H Bullen from Shreveport.
Clara Bow plans to depart Dallas Monday or Tuesday, cutting short a visit planned for two weeks. She cites hot weather and too much noise as the reasons. Her stay has featured mainly automobile rides and dances amid the city heat.
In Mexico City a representative of General Augustino Sandino announced he has returned to Nicaragua and defeated U S Marines in two engagements. Sandino's forces reportedly captured a Marine sergeant and an aviator and seized ten thousand rounds of ammunition and several guns.
